BALTIMORE, Md. - The No. 6 Stony Brook women's lacrosse team (7-2, 2-0 CAA) came from behind to take down Johns Hopkins (4-6, 1-1 Big 10), 12-9, on Wednesday at Homewood Field.
For the second consecutive game, junior midfielder
Ellie Masera led the Seawolves' offense with five goals. Senior attackers
Kailyn Hart and
Morgan Mitchell each tallied a pair of goals.
Jaden Hampel,
Erin MacQuarrie and
Charlotte Verhulst all added a goal in the contest.
The Blue Jays got on the board first courtesy of a free position goal by Bailey Cheetham and would hold the 1-0 lead for most of the first quarter. However, the Seawolves would not stay quiet for long as Masera found the back of the cage with 4:12 left to play in the first.
For the remainder of the first quarter, defense would reign superior as both teams went without a goal for the rest of the four minutes to enter the quarter break, 1-1. Stony Brook came out of the break strong, scoring within the first 15 seconds of the quarter thanks to a free position goal by Mitchell.
With 12:53 left in the second quarter, Hopkins scored a free position goal of its own to tie the contest once again at 2-2. Less than 20 seconds later, MacQuarrie converted at the hash mark to take back the lead for the Seawolves. Stony Brook and Hopkins would take turns trading blows for the remainder of the quarter and enter halftime knotted up at 4-4.
The Seawolves got off to a hot start coming out of the halftime break, taking a 6-4 lead with 9:33 left in the third quarter after back-to-back goals by Masera and Hart. Once again, the Blue Jays would not back down as they came from behind to take a 8-6 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
Masera scored three of Stony Brook's six goals in the final quarter, all one after another to give the squad a 9-8 lead with 8:53 left to play. Hart, Verhulst, and Hampel all added a goal in the quarter to secure the lead for the Seawolves and ultimately the 12-9 victory.
