LEON, Mexico - Former three-time All-Conference selection and two-time America East Champion women's basketball alumna India Pagan '22 represented Puerto Rico with the Senior Women's National Team at the 2023 FIBA Women's AmeriCup in Leon, Mexico, this past week.
Puerto Rico played four games in four days during the opening Group B Phase, with victories against Columbia, Dominican Republic, and Mexico to ultimately finish pool play 3-1 that pushed the squad to the quarterfinals. After Puerto Rico defeated Mexico again to move into the semifinal, the team would ultimately fall to Brazil in the semifinals and Canada in the third-place game to finish the tournament in fourth-place.
Pagan, who has been playing professionally for BC Pharmaserv Marburg in Germany, the Patriotas de Lares in Baloncesto Superior Nacional Femenino, and represented Puerto Rico at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, FIBA World Cup, Puerto Rican Junior National Team, and 2021 and 2022 FIBA Women's AmeriCup, joined 11 professional and collegiate members on the squad as the team entered the tournament ranked No. 10 in the FIBA World Rank.
In her five games during the tournament, Pagan averaged 10.2 minutes, scored three points, had five blocks, and grabbed eight rebounds. Pagan played 16 minutes against Brazil in the semifinals and notched three points and three rebounds in her 14 minutes against Canada in the third-place game.
During her career with Stony Brook, she finished second in field goal percentage, fifth in field goals made, and eighth on the all-time scoring and rebounding lists. She concluded her final season on Long Island by averaging 12.3 points per game over 26 starts and ranked 13th in the NCAA for field goal percentage.
Since the event's inception in 1993, the United States has captured four AmeriCup gold medals, including titles in 2019 and 2021. In addition to the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela will participate in the 2023 FIBA AmeriCup.
