STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook University baseball head coach Matt Senk has announced the appointment of CJ Whelan as an assistant and pitching coach for the upcoming 2024 season.
"We are very excited to have CJ join our coaching staff. During the time CJ has transitioned from his playing days at San Joaquin Delta College and Tulane University, he has shown a high level of aptitude and hands-on coaching ability to develop pitchers to their full potential," Senk said regarding the addition of Whelan to the program. "Also, CJ's experience as a recruiting coordinator will significantly enhance our opportunity to attract outstanding student athletes throughout the country as he works in concert with associate head coach/recruiting coordinator, Jim Martin."
Whelan joins the Seawolves after spending the past two seasons as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at San Joaquin Delta College.
"I could not be more thankful for the opportunity Coach Senk has given me to join the Stony Brook baseball family," Whelan said about joining the Stony Brook family. "I'm super excited to continue the rich history of this program and really looking forward to working with this team."
Whelan began his coaching experience as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at San Joaquin Delta College, the same college where Whelan embarked on his collegiate career. He also coached David Rodriguez (Atlanta Braves) and Will Watson (Seattle Mariners), who were both selected in the 2023 MLB Draft. Whelan left SJDC with 71 wins and 23 losses over his two seasons as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.
Prior to his coaching career, Whelan played collegiate baseball at Tulane and San Joaquin Delta. During his time at Tulane from 2019-2021 (2020 canceled due to COVID-19), the right-hander recorded two victories and tossed 18.2 innings over 19 appearances on the hill. The Green Wave earned over 30 wins in both seasons that Whelan played in.
The Rocklin, Calif. native started his first two years of his collegiate career at San Joaquin Delta under head coach Reed Peters and pitching coach Mat Keplinger. In 2018, Whelan helped the team to a 43-9 overall record en route to winning the 2018 California State Championship, the Big 8 Conference title
and a No. 2 national ranking in Perfect Game's final national poll. During the regular season, he went 3-0 on the bump with a 1.31 ERA.
In the prior summer, the right-hander also suited up for the Dodge City A's in the Jayhawk League and went 5-0 with two saves and a 1.12 ERA. Over the course of his collegiate career, he owned an overall record of 10-0 (SJDC, Tulane, and Dodge City).
