Football Rounds out Coaching Staff for 2024 Season

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook football has announced its full coaching staff for the 2024 season, rounding out its coaches which will assist first year head coach Billy Cosh, as announced by the program on Wednesday.
 
Stony Brook will add D.J. Gillins and Adam Lovan to the offensive coaching staff while Kevin Elliott and Zuril Hendrick join on the defensive side of the ball. Stony Brook also retains Chris BacheCal Daniels, Sean Hammonds, Josh Heinrich, and Steve Martino on the staff for the upcoming year.
 
The newcomers and returners will work under newly announced offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Anthony Davis II and defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Scott Lewis.
 
Gillins, who will take over as the running backs coach, comes from Long Island University where he had been the wide receivers coach since 2022. He also had previous coaching stops at Utah State (2019), Arkansas (2019-20), Utah (2020-21) and Iowa Western Community College (2021-22). He worked with wide receivers during all of his coaching stops, with his first full-time role coming at IWCC.
 
He was a quarterback at four different schools in his college career, playing at Wisconsin (2014-15), Pearl River C.C. in Mississippi (2016), SMU (2017) and UTSA (2018). The Jacksonville, Fla. native earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from SMU in 2018.
 
Lovan was part of Cosh's offense at Western Michigan as a graduate assistant quarterbacks coach takes over as Stony Brook's quarterbacks coach and offensive recruiting coordinator. As a team last season, WMU was second in the MAC in passing offense (211.2), third in total offense (365.0) and average first downs (19.8) along with fifth in scoring (23.7) and offensive efficiency (123.3). His prior coaching stops included as a graduate assistant at Arkansas State (2021-22), a volunteer assistant at VMI (2020-21), and an undergraduate assistant at Indiana (2017-19).
 
He was a part of VMI's FCS Playoffs appearance in the 2020-21, working with the wide receivers and running backs, and coaching All-American wideout Jakob Herres. VMI put up at least 400 yards of total offense in six of eight games that season, including against No. 1 James Madison in the playoffs.
 
Bache will return for his 10th season at Stony Brook, all on the offensive line. He has also previously served as co-offensive coordinator for the Seawolves. He has been part of two Stony Brook playoff appearances in 2017 and 2018, as the Seawolves averaged 28.5 points per game in the 2017 season. Bache has coached eight All-Conference selections while at SBU.
 
Martino will enter his 11th season at Stony Brook, and ninth as tight ends coach in 2024. He coached Will Tye as a graduate assistant, who became Stony Brook's first player to ever play in an NFL game. Martino also successfully coached Daniels, who was two-time All-American as a player.
 
The aforementioned Daniels will return for his second season as an offensive assistant and assistant offensive line coach. As a player, he was a captain for the 2018 season when Stony Brook last reached the playoffs. He grabbed 70 catches for 719 yards with six receiving TDs in his playing career.
 
Elliott will be Stony Brook's special teams coordinator along with the outside linebackers coach. He comes from Missouri State where he served as the safeties coach (2023) and the outside linebackers coach (2022). Individually, Elliott's defenders ranked third in the MVFC in total tackles and fifth in passes defended in 2023. He was responsible for recruiting the St. Louis area during his time at Missouri State.
 
Prior to his time with the Grizzlies, Elliott was the associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Greensboro College [N.C.] from 2020-22 and at Concord University [Md.] from 2018-20, serving as both a defensive coordinator and a special teams coordinator during his time in Maryland. He served as the secondary coach in both roles. He was an All-Conference defender in four seasons at Concord, playing from 2008 to 2011.
 
Hendrick comes from Sacred Heart, where he spent the 2023 season as the cornerbacks coach. The Pioneers finished as the top pass defense in the NEC last season, allowing just 132.6 pass yards per game. SHU was also the second-best scoring defense in the league last year. Hendrick has also coached collegiately at Utica University (2019-20; 2022-23) and at Pittsford High School in New York State Section 5.
 
He played for Division II Edinboro University [Pa.] where he is the school's all-time interception leader with 21 picks, and totaled 195 career tackles. Hendrick earned All-American, All-Region and All-Conference honors as a collegiate student-athlete. Professionally, he received two NFL rookie minicamp invitations in 2019 with the Chicago Bears and Denver Broncos. Hendrick also played with the Bismarck Bucks of the Indoor Football League in 2021, earning Second Team and All-Rookie Team distinctions.
 
Hammonds will remain coaching the defensive line after taking over the position in January 2023, returning to the coaching staff after spending a season at Kent State with special teams and as a recruiting assistant. In his first coaching stint at Stony Brook (2020-22), Hammonds assisted on the defensive staff and with the strength staff. He played three seasons at Ball State before appearing for the Seawolves in 2019, recording 30 tackles, 7.0 TFLs and 3.0 sacks in 12 games.
 
In addition to leading the defensive line, Hammonds will also serve as Stony Brook's defensive recruiting coordinator.
 
Heinrich returns for his sixth season on Long Island as the Director of Football Operations. Heinrich will continue to oversee the direct day-to-day operations of the football program including home games, away games, special events, and team travel.
