Volleyball Earns Fourth Straight Win; Defeats Northeastern in Four Set Victory

BOSTON, Mass.  -The Stony Brook volleyball team rallied after dropping the first set to secure a 3-1 victory against the Northeastern Huskies Friday afternoon on the road at Cabot Center. The conference win improved Stony Brook's record to 14-7 overall and 7-4 in CAA play.
 


 
The Seawolves were led by Leoni Kunz who had an all-around performance with 19 kills (.409 hitting), seven digs, six blocks, and a pair of assists and aces. Kali Moore registered a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs to help the Seawolves. On the defensive end, Julia Patsos chipped in for with 15 digs to go with a season-high seven blocks from Abby Campbell.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
SET 1 | The Seawolves found themselves in an early deficit, losing a tough first set, 25-18. Stony Brook trailed by as many as nine points as Northeastern took control early after six ties. The squad hit .152 through the opening frame as Kunz led with seven of the team's 13 kills.  The Huskies found a good tempo in response and had a match-high .281 hitting on an equal 13 kills.
 
SET 2 | Stony Brook fired back after dropping the first set to take set two, 25-17, to even the match.  The Seawolves led from the opening point and never looked back to secure the victory with their biggest lead of the stanza, eight points. The Stony Brook offense hit a match-high .226 with 10 kills and had a boost from three aces, while the front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Northeastern attacks.
 
SET 3 | Stony Brook went ahead 2-1 in the match after taking down the Huskies in the third set, 25-18. The Seawolves racked up a match-high 17 kills over the course of the set, hitting .218 with a team attacking effort from Kunz, Moore, Campbell, Henry, and Ayanna Pierre Louis.
 
SET 4 | Stony Brook ended the match with a 25-19 fourth-set victory, winning their third straight set. The Seawolves and Huskies had an equal 11 kills through the final set as Stony Brook held an offensive advantage, hitting .094 to Northeastern's .057. Quinn Anderson led in the final set with five kills.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Stony Brook had four players in double figures in digs (Patsos, Cigna, Henry, and Moore).
  • Leoni Kunz had a match-high 19 kills for Stony Brook. She also recorded seven digs, six blocks, two assists, and two aces in the four-set victory.
  • Kali Moore registered her 29th career double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. She added one assist and one block to her totals.
  • Stony Brook got a team-high 15 digs from Julia Patsos.
  • Stony Brook attackers were helped by a match-high 34 assists from Torri Henry. The graduate student setter has tallied 30 or more assists in all but three matches this season.
  • Abby Campbell tallied a season-high seven blocks for the Seawolves.
  • Ayanna Pierre Louis had a match-high three aces in the win.
  • With today's win, the Seawolves broke a seven-match losing streak to the Huskies that dated back to 2003. Stony Brook has gone 5-11 all-time against Northeastern.

"Northeastern is a really tough team to defend and they run a fast tempo," noted head coach Kristin Belzung postgame. "Once we figured the rhythm out a little bit we did a good job making them uncomfortable. Proud of our group for finding a way to get it done. Another quick turnaround to compete against them tomorrow."

The Seawolves return to the court tomorrow at 2 p.m. for the second of two matches against the Huskies of Northeastern. The match is set to broadcast on FloVolleyball.
