STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook women's basketball Associate Head Coach Steve Pogue has been selected to participate in the WBCA's second annual Next Generation Institute, the organization announced Wednesday morning.

A high-level education program for experienced assistant coaches who aspire to become head coaches at the NCAA Division I, II and III levels, the Next Generation Institute curriculum focuses on the CEO attributes needed to lead a program and be a problem-solver in today's ever-changing landscape of higher education and the enterprise of intercollegiate athletics.

"This is a well deserved opportunity for Steve," said Stony Brook women's basketball head coach Ashley Langford. "I am glad that the WBCA is supporting assistants that are ready for the next seat. I know Steve will learn and grow through this program."

Pogue is one of 33 coaches to be garnered to the list and just one of three coaches from the CAA (Haily Yohn and Cherie Lea from UNCW).

Entering his second year on the Island, Pogue has been an integral part of the program's success this season as the Seawolves are currently 19-3 and 9-2 in CAA play in the top of the standings. Earlier this season, Pogue was elevated to Associate Head Coach after previously serving as the Seawolves' assistant coach during the 2022-23.

In his first season with the Seawolves, Stony Brook posted an 18-13 overall record and a 17-11 mark in their first-ever year in CAA play. The Seawolves earned the No. 6 seed in their first-ever CAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals before ultimately falling to Northeastern.

To be eligible for selection to participate in the program, a person must be a current WBCA member, must have at least five years' experience as a college assistant coach, and must have been nominated by their head coach. Participants meet prior to (virtually), during (in person) and after (virtually) the WBCA Convention, which this year takes place April 4-7 in Cleveland.
