RICHMOND, Va. – Stony Brook freshman swimmer Sylvia Walker has earned the Coastal Athletic Association's Swimmer of the month for January after recording several victories and breaking a pair of University Pool records, the league announced on Tuesday.

Across three dual meets for the month, Walker claimed nine total victories in the pool – six in individual competitions and three in relays.

Her strong results in the first month of 2024 began at Monmouth on Jan. 13, where she won all four of her competitions. She swam the fastest 50 yards in the 200-free relay (23.79) and the fastest 100 yards in the 400-free relay (54.13), where Stony Brook recorded first-place finishes in both events. Individually, she finished first in the 200-free (1:57.02) and the 100-free (54.04) in that meet.

Against Rider on Jan. 20, Walker secured two more individual victories, with first-place finishes in the 50-free (24.23) and the 200-yard IM (2:09.77).

She closed out the month with three first-place finishes in a Stony Brook dual meet victory against Wagner on Jan. 27. Two of those victories marked University Pool records, in the 50-free (23.88) and the 100-free (51.68). She also teamed up for a 200-yard medley relay victory, as the team finished in 1:47.08 and Walker swam her 50 yards in 23.81, the fastest among all swimmers.

All told, Walker finished in first place nine times, second place three times and third place once in the 13 events she competed in. She earned 100 points for the Seawolves across three dual meets.

The Greenville, S.C. native has added Swimmer of the Month accolades on top of a Swimmer of the Week honor from the league on Dec. 5. This season, she has broken University Pool records in the 50-free, 100-free and as part of the 200-yard freestyle relay. The freshman has also set overall program records in these events this season with times of 23.58 in the 50-free, 51.03 in the 100-free and as part of a team time of 1:34.72 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Stony Brook will compete next in the CAA Championships from Feb. 27 - March 3 in Hampton, Va.
