STONY BROOK, N.Y. – After another back-and-forth battle, No. 11 Stony Brook was downed by a goal with 14.1 seconds to play, falling to No. 14 Denver in an 8-7 defensive-heavy contest at LaValle Stadium on Monday.
The Seawolves dropped to 5-2 on the season, while Denver improved to 4-3.
The Seawolves were led on offense by hat tricks from graduate student
Charlotte Verhulst and senior
Ellie Masera. Masera also tallied a game-high six draw controls while senior
Clare Levy added two.
Defensively,
Avery Hines caused four turnovers to tie a career high, adding two ground balls. Sophomore
Alexandra Fusco also caused two turnovers. Graduate student
Erin MacQuarrie picked up two ground balls and a caused a turnover on the day. In goal,
Emily Manning made six saves on a .429 save percentage.
Denver was led by Julia Gilbert who scored four goals on five shots. Olivia Penoyer added three assists to lead the Pioneers. Defensively, Sam Thacker caused three turnovers and picked up three ground balls, and Emilia Bohl turned in a six-save effort in goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Verhulst scored the first goal of the game just 2:18 into the contest. After a 10:15 scoreless stretch, Denver tied things at one to finish the quarter.
- The Seawolves took leads of 2-1 and 3-2 in the second, carrying the latter lead into halftime with Verhulst's second of the day. Denver was held scoreless across the final 10:05 of the quarter.
- Stony Brook scored twice to begin the third, taking a 5-2 lead with 8:37 left in the quarter. Denver rallied to tie things at five, with the tying goal coming at the end of the third.
- MacQuarrie re-took the lead in the fourth with a goal 2:29 into the period. After over six minutes of scoreless play, Gilbert scored twice to propel Denver ahead 7-6 with 4:53 to play. Masera responded from the free position 40 seconds later to tie things at seven.
- A broken play led to a loose ball in front, where Jane Earley picked up the ground ball to net the winner on the doorstep for Denver.
NOTES, TRENDS AND RECORDS
- The game had 39 total turnovers, 20 committed by Denver and 19 by Stony Brook. Twelve of Denver's 20 turnovers were caused by Stony Brook, with seven different Seawolves causing turnovers.
- SBU narrowly held the advantage on the shot clock, 22-19, while Denver held the draw control edge, 10-8.
- Stony Brook saw its 38-game home winning streak snapped, suffering its first home defeat since March 23, 2019.
