TOWSON, Md. – No. 11 Stony Brook women's lacrosse took its CAA opener against Towson on Saturday, going on a 3-0 run over the final 9:15 of gameplay for an 11-8 victory at Tiger Field Saturday afternoon.
Stony Brook improved to 6-2 (1-0) for the season while Towson dropped to 2-5 (1-0).
Offensively, senior
Ellie Masera led Stony Brook with four goals on eight shots. Graduate student
Charlotte Verhulst, senior
Clare Levy and sophomore
Courtney Maclay each scored twice, while graduate student
Kailyn Hart added a goal and an assist.
Stony Brook got five key saves from graduate student
Emily Manning, who made two of those stops in the fourth quarter. Both Levy and junior
Avery Hines finished with two caused turnovers and four ground balls for the afternoon.
Verhulst led the Seawolves with six draw controls on the afternoon, with Masera and Levy adding two each.
For the Tigers, Lindsey Marshall finished with a hat trick and an assist while Hannah Delahaye and Halley Koras each added a pair of goals. Goalkeeper Jo Torres finished with nine saves on a .450 save percentage on the afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Towson scored on the game's first possession, but Masera responded with a pair of goals to give SBU the lead at the 10:14 mark of the first.
- After Towson tied things 2:17 later, Verhulst scored to re-take the lead and finish the first quarter's scoring at the 5:14 mark.
- The Seawolves extended the lead to 6-2 with 8:27 left to play in the second. Towson responded with the last two goals of the half in the final 2:25.
- The Tigers cut things to one on the first possession of the third quarter, before Masera took the ensuing draw to cage to restore the two-goal advantage. Maclay netted her second of the game to extend the lead to 8-5 at the 10:20 mark.
- Towson cut the deficit to 8-6 at 4:11 of the third and 8-7 at 13:32 of the fourth, followed by the tying goal with 12:02 left in regulation.
- Hart scored from the free position to put Stony Brook up 9-8 with 9:15 left. The next 8:05 was scoreless, with Manning making a key save with under four minutes left.
- Then, Masera drove and scored with 1:10 left to make the score 10-8, before Stony Brook collected the next draw and Levy scored with 55 seconds to go.
NOTES, TRENDS AND RECORDS
- The Seawolves move their record to 10-0 in CAA matchups as a member of the league and they won their 54th consecutive conference game dating back to 2015.
- Verhulst has reached 202 draw controls for her career, the fifth player in program history to reach the 200 draw control milestone.
- The Seawolves won the shot battle, 29-17 and in shots on goal, 20-13.
- Stony Brook held Towson scoreless for the final 12:02 of Saturday's contest.
- Masera now has seven hat tricks in SBU's eight games this season, and 39 for her career.
- Levy earned her first multi-goal game of her career and converted on both of her shots.
