ORANGE, N.J. – Stony Brook baseball fell 4-3 to Seton Hall on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth, as the Pirates avoided the sweep at Sheppard Stadium on Sunday.

The loss dropped the Seawolves to 9-9 overall while the Pirates improved to 11-8.

Johnny Pilla and freshman
Erik Paulsen provided two hits with a double each, while graduate student
Brett Paulsen and seniors
Evan Fox and
Matt Brown-Eiring each had one hit. E. Paulsen, Brown-Eiring and sophomore
Nicholas Solorzano each had an RBI. Fox, E. Paulsen and sophomore
Matthew Wright each crossed the plate once.

Junior J.T. Raab started for the Seawolves and went 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out four without a walk. Sophomore
Jerek Hobb allowed a run on three hits in 0.1 innings. Junior
Colin Rhein (L, 0-2) pitched 2.0 innings, allowing a run on one hit in relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stony Brook put runners on the corners with nobody out in the top of the first, before Brown-Eiring hit a sacrifice fly to center for a 1-0 lead. After a double, Solorzano drove in the second run of the inning with a sac fly of his own.
- The Pirates hit a leadoff triple in the bottom of the second and drove home the run with an RBI groundout.
- After a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt began the bottom of the sixth, SHU tied the game with a single through the right side.
- The Pirates took the lead in the seventh with another one-out RBI single. However, Rhein got out of the jam with two runners on to prevent further damage.
- Fox led off the eighth with a double and Paulsen followed with a double of his own to tie the game at three.
- Seton Hall singled and moved the runner over on a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the ninth. Then, Kyle Lyons singled up the middle to plate the winning run.
STATS AND NOTES
- The Seawolves played their eighth consecutive game decided by one run, and they are 6-2 in that stretch.
- E. Paulsen recorded his sixth multi-hit game of the year while Pilla recorded his second.
- Raab had his longest outing and most strikeouts of the season on Sunday.
- Four of Stony Brook's seven hits were doubles.
