STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University baseball team was defeated 11-5 by Charleston on Friday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field to begin their three game weekend series with the Cougars.
Eddie Smink made the start and went three innings, allowing six runs (earned) and striking out three batters. Brendan Pattermann was a spark out of the pen, allowing no earned runs and striking out two in 2.2 innings of work.
In the batter's box, the Seawolves were paced by Johnny Pilla, who went 3-for-4 on the day. Evan Fox put together another solid performance, going 2-for-5 with a double and a pair of RBIs. Also Matt Brown-Eiring slammed his second home run of the season in the defeat.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Charleston jumped out a 4-0 lead with a grand slam in the top of the first.
- The Cougars tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly in the second.
- In the bottom of the inning, Evan Goforth put Stony Brook on the board with an RBI single to cut the lead to four.
- Charleston answered back with a two-run homer in the top of the third to take a 7-1 lead.
- In the top of the sixth, the Cougars scored two more runs on an RBI double and a fielder's choice.
- Stony Brook answered in the bottom half of the inning with a solo shot from Matt Brown-Eiring to make it a 9-2 ball game.
- The Cougars plated another run in the top of the seventh via an RBI triple.
- A two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh from Evan Fox brought home Johnny Pilla to make it 10-3
- Charleston added another insurance run in the ninth by means of a ground out.
- The Seawolves scored the game's final two runs in the bottom of the ninth, as both Robert Taylor and Fox brought home a run.
STATS AND NOTES
- Pilla's three hits were a new career high.
- Brown-Eiring's homer extended his hitting streak to five games. He leads the team with a .357 batting average this season.
- Fox has now reached base safely in 16 out of his 19 appearances this season.
- Pattermann tossed 2.2 innings out of the pen, allowing one unearned. His ERA remains a perfect 0.00 to start the season.
- Smink made his team-high seventh start of the season the bump.
- The Seawolves tied a team-high with four doubles this afternoon.
- Stony Brook is now 1-6 all-time against Charleston.
