STONY BROOK, N.Y., -- Sophomore Matthew Wright collected four hits, but the Stony Brook Seawolves fell to the Charleston Cougars 17-8 on Saturday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.
In addition to his four hits, Wright had a double and an RBI to lead the Seawolves. Senior Matt Brown-Eiring put together a standout performance as well, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, a walk and two RBI. Sophomore Johnny Pilla also contributed for Stony Brook, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After the 1-2-3 opening inning by freshman Nicholas Rizzo, the Seawolves got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Stony Brook got on the board thanks to Pilla's RBI double.
The Cougars then rallied to score seven runs and take a 7-1 lead before the Seawolves got back on the board in the fifth. which tightened the Cougars lead to 7-4. Wright began the inning with a double and would score later in the inning from an RBI ground out from Evan Fox. Pilla singled in the next at-bat, followed by a walk from Brown-Eiring. The Seawolves made the most of an error by the Cougars in the outfield, bringing in Pilla and Brown-Eiring.
Charleston built their lead to 13-4 before the Stony Brook offense got back in action, reducing that lead to 13-8 in the seventh. The Seawolves bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a two-run home run off the bat of Brown-Eiring. The Seawolves were unable to get any closer, as Charleston added four runs to their tally on the way to a 17-8 final.
STATS AND NOTES
- Wright put together a four-hit day for the Seawolves. Hit four-hit day marked a new career-high for the sophomore and his first multi-hit game of the season.
- Stony Brook's power output was led by Brown-Eiring, who had two extra base hits in the ballgame, including his third homer of the season. He is tied for the team-lead in homers (3) and leads the squad in hits (37), batting average (.363), and RBI (20).
- Stony Brook's highest scoring inning was the seventh, when it pushed four runs across.
- Four Stony Brook hitters had multiple base knocks in the ballgame (Fox, Pilla, Brown-Eiring and Fox).
- Stony Brook pitchers faced 48 Charleston (SC) hitters in the game, allowing eight ground balls and 14 fly balls while striking out four.
- Freshman Nicholas Rizzo made his seventh start of the season, tying a team-high with Eddie Smink. He allowed six runs over 2.1 innings on the bump.
- Ty Saunders and Colton Book made appearances out of the pen.
- 13 hits this afternoon tied their season-high (13 vs Siena on March 8 and vs William & Mary on March 24).
