Brown-Eiring records 2 extra base hits in Stony Brook's loss to Charleston

STONY BROOK, N.Y., --The Stony Brook Seawolves got a big game out of Matt Brown-Eiring, who recorded two extra base hits in a 6-2 loss to the Charleston Cougars on Sunday to conclude the weekend series at Joe Nathan Field. 

JT Raab (1-1) got the ball to start for Stony Brook (12-15, 1-5) and took the loss after allowing five runs and striking out three batters over five innings. Erik Paulsen was a bright spot for the Seawolves, coming out of the bullpen and throwing four innings, giving up one run on four hits, with no walks and four strikeouts.

Brown-Eiring's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-4 day for the outfielder, and included two doubles and two RBI. Evan Fox, Johnny Pilla, Matthew Wright, and Cam Santerre all recorded hits for the Seawolves as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Raab tossed a scoreless 1-2-3 inning to begin the afternoon for Stony Brook. 
  • Brown-Eiring ripped a double to right-center in the first inning, but the Seawolves were unable to get him across. 
  • Charleston scored their first runs of the game in the second inning from a two-run home run and RBI single. The Cougars would then score again in the third inning from a solo-shot, giving themselves a 3-0 lead.
  • Raab retired six consecituive hitters over the fourth and fifth inning. 
  • The Cougars led off the sixth with a homer, forcing E. Paulsen into the game at 5-0. 
  • Following the 1-2-3 inning from the Seawolves in the bottom of the sixth, E. Paulsen would allow a hit to begin the seventh but tossed a 6-4-3 double play to ultimately get out of the inning. 
  • E. Paulsen tossed a 1-2-3 frame in the eighth inning, giving the momentum to the Seawolves. 
  • The Seawolves scored two runs with two outs in their half of the eighth inning. Fox began the rally with a single up the middle, followed by a walk from Wright. Brown-Eiring would drive the duo in from his double to left field, bringing the score to 5-2. 
  • The Cougars tallied an RBI-knock in the top of the ninth inning, pushing their lead to four runs.
  • Stony Brook brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the final inning, but the Cougars would secure their 6-2 victory by getting a foul-out to end the game.
STATS AND NOTES 
  • Stony Brook's power output was led by Brown-Eiring, who had two extra base hits in the ballgame. He is currently on a seven game hitting streak and leads the team with 14 multi-hit games this season.
  • Fox extended his hitting streak to six games. Also, he stole his 100th career bag in the defeat, the program's all-time leader in stolen bases.
  • Raab made his fourth start and eighth appearance of the season on the bump this afternoon. He moves to 1-1 on the season. 
  • E. Paulsen continued to shine on the mound by allowing one run over four innings on the bump. He has a 1.96 ERA over 23.0 innings this season and ranks second on the team with a .313 batting average. 
  • Wright finishes the weekend 5-for-10 with an RBI, run scored and double. 
  • Stony Brook's highest scoring inning was the eighth, when it pushed two runs across.
  • The Seawolves struck-out twice this afternoon, matching a season-low (two vs Purdue on Feb. 17 and vs Northwestern St. on Feb. 24). 
    Stony Brook pitchers faced 36 Charleston (SC) hitters in the game, allowing 10 ground balls and eight fly balls while striking out seven.
    The Seawolves move to 1-8 all-time against Charleston. 
  • The squad is 5-4 at Joe Nathan Field this season.
