SYRACUSE, N.Y. – In a back-and-forth battle all night, Stony Brook women's lacrosse rallied from two goals down in the fourth quarter and
Ellie Masera netted the overtime winner to win a 13-12 thriller over No. 5 Syracuse at the JMA Wireless Dome on Tuesday.
The Seawolves improved to 5-0 with the victory while the Orange dropped to 3-3.
Stony Brook was led by graduate student
Kailyn Hart who scored a game-high five goals and added an assist for six points on the night. Classmate
Alex Finn also added a goal and five assists for six points. Masera tallied four goals on eight shots, with seven on goal, adding nine draw controls.
On defense, junior
Avery Hines caused three opposition turnovers and picked up three ground balls. Graduate student
Erin MacQuarrie picked up four ground balls to lead the Seawolves, while
Jaden Hampel and sophomore Alex Fusco each picked up two. In goal, graduate student
Emily Manning made four saves, with two key stops in the fourth quarter.
In addition to Masera's game-high nine draw controls, senior
Clare Levy added four to her stat line.
Emma Tyrell scored three times for the Orange while Olivia Adamson, Emma Ward and Savannah Sweitzer each scored twice. Delaney Sweitzer made nine saves for Syracuse on the evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Seawolves killed off early penalties that put them two women down. Then, Masera struck on the free position and Mitchell added another off a cut for a 2-0 lead at the 7:09 mark.
- Ward scored for Syracuse, but Hart tallied a shorthanded goal to restore the two-goal lead. The Orange scored late to put things a 3-2 at quarter's end.
- Syracuse tied the game twice in the second, making things 4-4 at the 11:16 mark. After 8:48 of scoreless play, Finn put the Seawolves back up a goal, a lead Stony Brook carried into halftime.
- Syracuse grabbed its first lead of the game with 11:31 left to play in the third at 6-5, followed by another at 8:36 to make things 7-5.
- Stony Brook then followed that up with a 3-0 run over 1:57 with two goals from Hart and one from Hampel, taking the lead at 8-7. Syracuse scored the last goal of the quarter for a 8-8 tie after 45 minutes.
- Hart put the Seawolves ahead 9-8 early in the fourth, before Syracuse responded with a 3-0 run to take an 11-9 lead with 7:23 to play, doing so in 1:59.
- After a Manning save, Stony Brook scored three times to take the lead with 1:08 remaining, with goals from Charlotte Verhulst, Hart and Masera. Syracuse tied the game with 10 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
- Masera won the draw and drew a Syracuse green card on a foul. Stony Brook held the ball for the remainder of the possession and scored 1:31 into overtime with Masera netting the game-winner.
NOTES, TRENDS AND RECORDS
- The Seawolves mark their fifth all-time win against a top-five opponent, and second all-time win over Syracuse (Feb. 10, 2020), with both coming with the Orange ranked in the top five.
- Stony Brook has won a game over a ranked opponent for the 11th consecutive season.
- The Seawolves won an overtime game for the first time since May 10, 2019, when they defeated James Madison 10-9 in the NCAA Tournament first round.
- There were eight ties and four lead changes in Tuesday's matchup.
- Stony Brook held the shots advantage, 31-27, ground balls advantage 17-13 and draw controls edge, 15-14.
- The Seawolves overcame 10 minutes of penalties, allowing just one woman-up goal in the contest.
