CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Stony Brook women's lacrosse made a furious rally across the third and fourth quarters, but the comeback effort came up just short as the Seawolves suffered a 14-12 defeat to No. 15 Johns Hopkins at American Legion Memorial Field on Saturday.
The Seawolves dropped to 5-1 on the season while the Blue Jays won their fourth straight to improve to 7-2.
Stony Brook was led by graduate student
Kailyn Hart, who netted four goals and added an assist for five points. Senior
Ellie Masera also ended Saturday with five points, scoring two goals and distributing three assists. Freshman
Isabella Caporuscio also scored twice, while graduate students
Alex Finn,
Erin MacQuarrie,
Charlotte Verhulst and senior
Jaden Hampel each scored once. Finn and junior
Molly LaForge had two assists on the day.
Caporuscio led Stony Brook with two caused turnovers, while eight others had one. MacQuarrie and Verhulst each finished with three ground balls and seven others came up with two on Saturday.

Clare Levy came up with three.
Johns Hopkins was led by Ashley Mackin with a hat trick and four points in total. Maeve Barker added a hat trick. In goal, Madison Doucette came up with a 14-save goaltending effort on a .538 save percentage, making four stops in the fourth quarter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stony Brook jumped out to a 2-0 lead 3:55 in with goals from Hart and Caporuscio. However, Johns Hopkins managed to score the final four goals of the quarter to grab a 4-2 lead.
- Down 6-3 in the second, the Seawolves got goals from Hampel and Masera, with the latter coming with 20 seconds left to go in the quarter.
- Stony Brook held Johns Hopkins scoreless across the final 8:09 of the second period.
- The Blue Jays scored seven straight times to start the third, spanning a run of 7:53 from the 13:14 to 5:21 marks of the period to take a 13-5 lead.
- Stony Brook responded with four straight to cut the deficit in half, started by two goals from Hart and finishing with MacQuarrie and Verhulst just eight seconds apart.
- The Stony Brook run was then extended to 7-0 after goals by Finn, Masera and Caporuscio, pushing the deficit to 13-12 with 7:23 remaining.
- Stony Brook had two shots to tie the game, but one was saved by Doucette and the other was wide. Johns Hopkins added a woman-up insurance goal with 1:58 to play and grabbed the ensuing draw control to ice the game.
NOTES, TRENDS AND RECORDS
- Stony Brook held JHU scoreless for a span of 18:23 as the Seawolves cut the second-half deficit from eight to one.
- SBU picked up 22 ground balls, its most since picking up 27 on May 4, 2023 against Delaware.
- The Seawolves led on the shot-board, 34-24, and in shots on goal 26-17, but Doucette's 14 saves contributed to just a .353 SBU shooting percentage on the night, while Johns Hopkins shot .583.
- Hart has scored at least four goals in three straight games, averaging 4.67 per game in that run.
- LaForge picked up her first two assists of her career on Saturday.

Stony Brook will finish a three-game stretch against top-15 opponents on Monday, March 11, taking on No. 10 Denver. First draw is set for noon at LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves and Pioneers will face off for the first time in five years, with Denver holding a 6-3 edge in nine all-time meetings.
