PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior midfielder
Ellie Masera filled the stat sheet on Sunday afternoon as her 12 points (seven goals, five assists) and 13 draw controls helped power No. 15 Stony Brook past Drexel, 18-11. The win was the Seawolves eighth in a row as they extended their season-long winning streak and improved to 13-2, 7-0 CAA.
Stony Brook's eight-game winning streak is its longest such streak since the 2022 season when it rattled off 14-straight wins from March 13-May 15. The Seawolves (7-0) are joined by Long Island rival Hofstra (6-0) as the only remaining undefeated teams in CAA play.
After trailing, 4-3, following the first quarter of play, Stony Brook went on to outscore Drexel, 15-7, over the final three quarters. After Drexel scored the first goal of the second quarter at the 12:34 mark, the Seawolves went on to rattle off seven consecutive goals, a scoring run that extended into the third quarter, and they never looked back.
Masera scored four of her seven goals in the first half, with three goals coming in the second quarter alone. Graduate attack
Kailyn Hart and graduate midfielder
Charlotte Verhulst each tallied hat tricks as they continued their standout play on Sunday. Two of Hart's three goals came in the second half, while all three of Verhulst's scores came in the second quarter as she scored back-to-back-to-back goals over a 1:23 span.
After the team's played an even third quarter (4-4), Stony Brook went on to outscore Drexel, 5-2, in the fourth to seal the win. After the Dragons cut the lead to 13-10 with 12:38 to play in the fourth, Stony Brook went on to score four-straight goals over a nearly seven-minute span to put the game out of reach, 17-10, with 3:52 to play.
The teams traded goals over the final 3:15 of the game and the Seawolves went on to claim the 18-11 victory.
Defensively, junior defender
Avery Hines forced a game-high tying three turnovers and picked up three ground balls. Sophomore midfielder
Allie Masera added two caused turnovers and two ground balls in the win. Senior goalie
Aaliyah Jones picked up the win in the cage.
STATS AND NOTES
- Masera scored seven goals and dished out a career-high tying five assists for a 12-point performance. The 12 points were a career-high and were one-shy of tying the Stony Brook single-game record of 13, which was done by Claire Petersen on March 9, 2013 (two goals, 11 assists). Masera's 12-point outing tied Taryn Ohlmiller (vs. Rutgers, May 16, 2021) and Kylie Ohlmiller (vs. Bryant, February 18, 2017) for the second-most points in a single-game by a Stony Brook player in program history. Masera added 13 draw controls and went 1-for-1 on free-position shots in the win. The 13 draw controls were her second-most in a game this season and the most since she recorded a career-high 17 against Villanova on March 2. Masera went a perfect 11-of-11 from the field.
- Hart racked up five points (three goals, two assists) in the win. It marked her seventh consecutive game with five or more points and 11th hat trick (seventh-straight hat trick). It was the fourth time this season that she dished out two or more assists in a game.
- Verhulst recorded a hat trick and registered a season-high tying six draw controls. It was her eighth hat trick of the season, and she has tallied hat tricks in five of the last six games.
- Hines anchored the defense by causing three turnovers and picking up three ground balls. She has caused three or more turnovers in three out of the last four games.
- Allie Masera caused a career-high two turnovers and picked up a career-high tying two ground balls.
- Stony Brook outshot Drexel, 35-15, and had 31 shots on goal to the Dragons' 13.
- The Seawolves controlled the draws as they recorded 21 to Drexel's 12.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"Great road win against a very good Drexel team. I thought that our team came out and survived an early Drexel run and responded like a veteran team should. Our draw team was the difference today in securing possessions allowing us to play – make it, take it. This was a long road trip for us, one that allowed our team to bond as well as play some high-level lacrosse. It was a great week for us with three good wins," said head coach
Joe Spallina as he shared his thoughts on the Seawolves eighth consecutive win.
"Ellie's performance was extraordinary, one of the best I've seen dominating in so many facets of the game. She displayed why she is one of the best in the NCAA. She makes it all look easy," said coach Spallina as he discussed the play of
Ellie Masera.
