STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Senior midfielder
Jaden Hampel was the hero on Thursday at LaValle Stadium for No. 13 Stony Brook women's lacrosse as her game-winning goal in overtime lifted the Seawolves over No. 19 Stanford, 11-10. With the win, Stony Brook extended its season-long winning streak to 10 games in a row, it's longest such streak since winning 14 consecutive games during the 2022 season.
Hampel's game-winner came just 1:31 into the overtime period as she was assisted by senior midfielder
Ellie Masera. Masera found Hampel cutting to the net, and she fired a lefty shot past Stanford's goalie Lucy Pearson who had previously made 12 saves in the game. For Hampel, it was her lone goal of the game and it was a shorthanded goal.
The Seawolves' final offensive possession was set up by stout defensive play by Masera and freshman midfielder
Isabella Caporuscio. Stanford began overtime with the ball on its defensive end of the field. Masera pressured Stanford's Jordyn Case but was called for a foul. When play resumed, Caporuscio picked up Case and forced a huge turnover as she knocked the ball out of her stick and scooped up the ground ball. The standout defensive play allowed the Seawolves to get settled on the offensive end and led to the game-winning goal.
Stanford controlled a two-goal lead, 10-8, with 9:27 to play in the fourth quarter. Stony Brook closed the game on a 3-0 scoring run as it received goals from Caporuscio, junior midfielder
Alexandra Fusco, and the game-winner from Hampel down the stretch. For Caporuscio, Fusco, and Hampel the goals were all their only goals of the game, and they all came in crucial spots.
Masera led a trio of multi-goal scorers as she, graduate attack
Kailyn Hart, and graduate attack
Morgan Mitchell all scored two goals apiece. Masera led all scorers with a game-high five points as she had three assists to go along with her two goals.
Senior goalie
Aaliyah Jones made a career-high seven saves in net as she along with junior defender
Avery Hines, and graduate defender
Rachel Rosenberg anchored the defense. Hines caused four turnovers and picked up two ground balls, while Rosenberg recorded a ground ball and was strong on the defensive end all game long.
