Rhein's Eight-Strikeout Outing; Wright's Three Hits Powers Stony Brook Past Monmouth

B. Paulsen Tallies 200th Career Hit

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ --Junior Colin Rhein dominated on Friday, punching out eight Monmouth hitters over 6.2 innings of work, and sophomore Matthew Wright tallied three hits to help propel the Stony Brook Seawolves over the Hawks 9-1 in West Long Branch, N.J. 

In addition to his eight strikeouts, Rhein (3-2) went 6.2 innings, giving up one run on five hits and walking none for Stony Brook (22-17, 10-6). Sophomore Eddie Smink also made an impact on the mound for the Seawolves, starting the ballgame and throwing 1.1 shutout innings while allowing no hits, with no walks and one strikeout. Brendan Pattermann finished off the game in the final inning by putting away the Hawks in order. 

At the plate, the Seawolves were paced by senior Evan Fox, who went 2-for-5 on the day with a double, a home run and two RBI. Sophomore Matthew Wright put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Senior Ryan Micheli also chipped in for Stony Brook, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBI.

In the top of the eighth inning, Brett Paulsen tallied his 200th career hit after his double to center. He went 2-for-4 in the victory. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Seawolves were trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. Stony Brook pushed across two runs in the frame, the big blow coming on an RBI double from Wright.

The Hawks failed to push any runs across before Stony Brook built on their lead in the seventh inning. The offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Fox, which brought the score to 6-1 in favor of the Seawolves.

Stony Brook held Monmouth without a run before building their lead to 9-1 in the ninth inning. The Seawolves scored three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-run single off the bat of Micheli. The score remained 9-1 for the rest of the game, as Patermann closed the door in the ninth inning. 

STATS AND NOTES

  • Stony Brook's highest scoring inning was the seventh, when it pushed four runs across.
  • Five Seawolves had multiple hits in the ballgame (Fox, E. Paulsen, B. Paulsen, Micheli and Wright). 
  • The Seawolves out-hit the Hawks at a 14-5 clip, tying a season-high. 
  • Stony Brook went 4-for-11 (.364) with runners in scoring position.
  • Stony Brook pitchers faced 33 Monmouth hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and nine fly balls while striking out nine.
  • Wright tallied his third game of the season with at-least three hits by finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI. He is now hitting .323 on the year and has scored a run in his last three games.
  • Fox had a stellar day at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and two RBI. It was his 15th home run of his career and marked his first multiple extra base-hit game of the season for the senior. 
  • B. Paulsen notched his 200 career hit in the victory. He went 2-for-4 with a run scored and walked.
  • E. Paulsen and Micheli both tallied two hits. Micheli also produced two RBI. 
  • Rhein earned his third victory of the season by allowing one run and struck out eight batters over his 6.2 innings of work. It marked a new career-high in strikeouts for the right-hander and tallied his third appearance of the season throwing at-least 6.0 innings.
  • Pattermann finished the final inning of the game by shutting down the Hawks in order.
  • With the victory, Stony Brook extends their winning streak to six games. Also, they've won 9 of their last 10 games. 
  • The Seawolves move to 6-1 all-time against the Hawks, winning their previous five meetings. 
  • Stony Brook moves to 10-6 in the CAA this season and 8-9 away from home.
