WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -- JT Raab got the start and allowed two runs, one earned, over 6.1 innings this afternoon but the Monmouth Hawks ultimately defeated the Seawolves 3-0 in the rubber game at MU Baseball Field.
Raab made his 12th start of the season for the squad and continued to produce outs for the Seawolves. In his 6.1 innings, Raab surrendered five hits, two walks and struck out two batters. In his last four starts, Raab has a 2.29 ERA and reached 6.0 innings in three of the four starts. Following the exit of Raab,
Erik Paulsen made his 12th appearance out of the bullpen. The left-hander finished the final 1.2 innings, allowing one run and two hits.
In the box, the trio of Kevin Opanel, Tommy Kent, and Derek Benzinger held the Seawolves to just one hit in the ballgame. However, Stony Brook drew five walks this afternoon and got hit by a pitch in the defeat.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Raab sat down the first three Hawks in order, the Seawolves came to the plate in the second inning and loaded the bases following a hit from Johnny Pilla, walk drawn by Brett Paulsen and hit by pitch from Santerre. However, Stony Brook was unable to get a run across, leaving the second inning with a 0-0 tie.
The right-hander for Stony Brook was working in and out of trouble over the next three innings. In the third, Raab stranded runners at second and third base. After the 1-2-3 inning from Raab in the fourth, he came back in the fifth inning by stranding another two Hawks on base.
However, Monmouth would get on the scoreboard first in the sixth inning from an RBI double and sacrifice-fly to give the home team a 2-0 advantage. The Hawks came back in the eighth with another RBI knock, taking a 3-0 lead.
The Seawolves last got a runner on third and first in the ninth, when junior Matt Miceli made it 90 feet away from scoring and Pilla on first with one out but the Hawks held on to the 3-0 victory by getting a game-ending double play.
