FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Stony Brook received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, but the Seawolves ultimately fell to the Fairfield Stags 13-7 this afternoon.
Sophomore Jerek Hobb (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Stony Brook (22-20) after allowing three runs (two earned) over an inning of relief. Senior Ty Saunders started the ballgame and went three innings, surrendering one run on three hits, walking none and striking out one. After Hobb, freshman Ty Panariello and senior Quinlan Montgomery allowed a combined nine runs over the final four innings of the ballgame.
At the plate, the Seawolves were led by freshman Matthew Jackson, who went 1-for-1 on the day with his first career home run and three RBI. Junior Matt Miceli compiled a standout performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore Matthew Wright continued to shine for Stony Brook, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Seawolves first put runs on the board in the second inning. Wright drove in two runs for Stony Brook with a single, that scored Miceli and junior Nicholas Solorzano. Freshman Erik Paulsen started the rally with a lead-off hit, followed by a fielder's choice from Miceli that brought up Solorzano with two-runners on. After the walk by Evan Goforth, Wright sizzled a ball to left-center that gave the Seawolves the lead.
The Stags then rallied to score a run in the fourth, seven in the fifth and another in the sixth to take the 10-2 lead before the squad got back on the board in the eighth. Stony Brook pushed across a run on Miceli's two-out RBI double, which tightened the Fairfield lead to 10-3.
The road team built their lead to 13-3 before the Stony Brook offense got going, reducing that lead to 13-7 in the ninth. The Seawolves bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Jackson.
Stony Brook ignited the rally with three consecutive walks from Scott Gell, Joseph Delanzo, and Cal Parrillo. Following a strikeout from Stony Brook, Matt DeStefano brought home a run on a fielder's choice before the moonshot from Jackson. The ballgame ended with that ninth inning rally falling short.
