STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- JT Raab dominated on Sunday, punching out a career-high eight Elon hitters over six innings of work to help lead the Seawolves past the Phoenix 6-3. With the victory, Stony Brook secures the weekend sweep over Elon.
In addition to his eight strikeouts, Raab (2-1) gave up one run on five hits and walked one for Stony Brook (15-15, 4-5). Brendan Pattermann earned his first save of the season after completing the final 3.0 innings, allowing two runs and three hits.
Offensively, the Seawolves were led by junior Matt Miceli, who went 3-for-4 on the day with a double and an RBI. Senior Evan Fox put together a standout effort as well, going 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Senior Brett Paulsen also helped out for Stony Brook, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Raab worked in and out of trouble during the first few innings of play. The right-hander stranded a runner on second-base in the first and second innings, and left a runner at third-base in the third frame. But, Elon would get on the board first following the home run from Offshack in the fourth inning.
Trailing 1-0, the Seawolves first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. Stony Brook's offense started clicking and put up four runs to take the lead. Miceli led the inning off with a double down the right-field line and
Matthew Wright advance him to third base on a fly-ball to left field.
Ryan Micheli knocked in the first run of the game for the Seawolves on an RBI single. Following the walk from Fox and knock by
Johnny Pilla to load the bases,
Matt Brown-Eiring tallied an RBI and made the most of an Elon error to take the 3-1 advantage. Few batters later, B. Paulsen extended the lead to 4-1 by drawing a bases-loaded walk.
The Phoenix failed to push any runs across before the Seawolves offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Micheli reached on a single and Stony Brook pushed across a run on Fox's one-out RBI double, which brought the score to 5-1 in favor of the home team.
Elon narrowed Stony Brook's lead to 5-3 before the Seawolves stretched the advantage to 6-3 in the seventh inning. The Seawolves scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Miceli. The score remained 6-3 for the rest of the game, as Pattermann shut the door to allow Stony Brook to secure the weekend sweep over Elon.
