STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook women's lacrosse extended its winning streak to six games in a row with a 13-10 win over Rutgers on Tuesday night at LaValle Stadium. The six-game winning streak is the Seawolves' longest of the season and the victory marks their third of the year against a Power Five opponent (also defeated Arizona State and Syracuse, who was ranked No. 5 in the nation at the time of the game).
Stony Brook was paced by four multi-goal scorers as graduate attack
Kailyn Hart and graduate midfielder
Charlotte Verhulst each tallied hat tricks, while senior midfielder
Ellie Masera and graduate attack
Alex Finn registered two goals apiece.
Hart opened the scoring for the Seawolves early in the first quarter with the 199
th goal of her career. The graduate went on to put the Seawolves up 2-0 with 10:16 to play in the first, the goal was the 200
th of her career. Hart became the fifth player in program history to reach the 200-goal mark in their career and first since Taryn Ohlmiller in 2021.
Senior defender
Clare Levy scored her lone goal of the game in highlight reel fashion, cutting to the net on a feed from
Jaden Hampel with 13:40 to play in the second quarter. The goal put Stony Brook up, 4-3, and kicked off a 7-0 scoring run, which carried over into the third quarter.
Masera's first goal of the game gave the Seawolves' a 6-3 lead with 11:24 to play in the second quarter. For Masera, it was the 200
th goal of her career and she became the sixth player in program history to reach the milestone.
Hart and Masera joined Stony Brook legends Courtney Murphy (341), Ally Kennedy (266), Kylie Ohlmiller (252), and Taryn Ohlmiller (219) as the only players in program history to reach the 200-goal plateau.
The Seawolves took an 8-3 lead into the halftime break as six different scorers recorded goals over the first 30 minutes of play. Stony Brook went on to outscore the Scarlet Knights, 4-2, in the third quarter behind goals from Masera, Finn, Hart, and Verhulst to take a 12-4 lead into the fourth.
Rutgers put together a strong come-from-behind effort in the fourth quarter behind a 6-0 scoring run that cut Stony Brook's lead to 12-10. Finn ended the Scarlet Knights' scoring run with her second goal of the game, which came with 2:44 to play in the game.
Stony Brook went on to hold its 13-10 advantage and won by that final score.
Defensively, junior defender
Avery Hines caused four turnovers and picked up a pair of ground balls to anchor the defense. Graduate goalie
Emily Manning earned the win in net and made seven saves.
STATS AND NOTES
- Hart tallied six points (three goals, three assists). It was the 10th time this season that she recorded five or more points in a game and the performance marked her ninth hat trick of the season. Hart has recorded five or more points and hat tricks in each of her last five games. Her three assists were a season-high.
- Verhulst also registered a hat trick to go along with three ground balls and a draw control. It was her seventh hat trick of the season and fourth consecutive.
- Masera found the back of the net twice as she has now tallied double-digit goals in all 11 games that she has played in this season. The senior added four draw controls to the stat sheet in the win.
- Finn added a pair of goals of her own and dished out two assists for a four-point outing. It was her 10th multi-point game of the season and sixth multi-goal game.
- Hines caused four turnovers and scooped up three ground balls to anchor the defense. It was her 10th game of the season recording multiple caused turnovers and the fifth time she caused four or more.
- Manning picked up her seventh win in the cage and she made seven saves.
- Stony Brook improves to 5-1 all-time against Rutgers and 8-1 at LaValle Stadium this season.
- The Seawolves outshot Rutgers, 27-18, putting 21 shots on net to the Scarlet Knights' 17.
