STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook baseball freshman Erik Paulsen continues to get recognized for his stellar rookie campaign after being named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-America Second Team, as announced by the organization on Monday afternoon.

The Long Island native paced the Seawolves on both sides of the diamond during his rookie season. Paulsen finished the year with a 2-1 record in 15 appearances during the season. Serving as the primary closer, Paulsen's six saves, were tied for third in the CAA, tied for fifth in program history and tied for second in the country among freshman. He also tallied 24 strikeouts and owned a 3.21 earned run average over 42.0 innings of work.

In the box, Paulsen found his name in all four spots at the top of the lineup. He completed his rookie campaign with a slash line of .299/.392/.458. He ranked top-three on the team in numerous offensive categories, including batting average, on-base percentage, hits (53), home runs (4), runs batted in (24), doubles (16) and total bases (81). He was also tied for second on the team in multi-hit games (14) and tied for third in multi-RBI games (5).

Pauslen became the first player in program history to be named the CAA Rookie of the Year and was named All-CAA Honorable Mention, as well as capturing a spot on the CAA All-Rookie Team. He also earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors on three different occasions (March 4, March 11 and April 25), becoming the only player in the conference to earn the weekly honor three different times this season.

On May 15, Paulsen was selected as one of 10 semifinalists and the only freshman for the historic John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award by the College Baseball Foundation, which honors the best two-way player in Division I. Paulsen was the only player in the CAA to be represented on the list and it marked the first time in program history that a player was named a semifinalist for the award.

Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists of the sport. The Freshman All-American team is voted upon by the membership of the NCBWA.
