WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Stony Brook volleyball team showed impressive determination as they knocked off William & Mary in a five-set thriller on Friday afternoon on the road. The conference win improved Stony Brook's record to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in CAA play.
The Seawolves were paced by
Kali Moore, who registered her 25
th career double-double, tallying a career-high 28 kills and 10 digs.
Leoni Kunz also added 14 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end,
Julia Patsos chipped in for with 24 digs to go with eight blocks from
Mercedes Motton.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | The Seawolves grabbed the first set 26-24 thanks to a strong showing on the attacking end. Stony Brook registered a .325 attack percentage with 16 kills in the set victory. After the lead changed hands eight times, the Seawolves took control for good late and rode that advantage to victory.
SET 2 | Stony Brook then fell in the second set 25-19, tying the match at a set apiece. William & Mary found their footing about halfway through the frame and then took over to d
SET 3 | Stony Brook then got back on the winning track, emerging victorious in set three and taking a 2-1 lead. The Seawolves won the first point and never looked back in the set to earn a 25-11 victory. Stony Brook opened as much as a 16-point lead before closing out the set. The Stony Brook offense got a boost from three aces, along with a solid defensive performance from the front row blocking four of the Tribe's attacks.
SET 4 | Stony Brook couldn't finish off a four-set win as the Tribe forced a fifth set with a 25-21 victory. The Seawolves trailed early just like in the second set as William & Mary took advantage and Stony Brook was unable to recover.
SET 5 | Stony Brook and William & Mary went back and forth all match, trading set wins until the Seawolves took set five 15-12 and ultimately, the match. The Seawolves grabbed the fifth set propelled by a strong performance on the attacking side. Stony Brook put together a .389 attack percentage with eight kills in the set win. After the lead changed hands one time, the Seawolves took control for good at 10-9 and rode that advantage to victory.
STATS AND NOTES
- Kali Moore registered her 25th career double-double, with a career and match-high 28 kills and 10 digs. She added one ace and one block to her totals.
- Stony Brook had four players in double figures in digs (Patsos, Fuertez, Henry, and Moore).
- Stony Brook got a team-high 24 digs from Julia Patsos.
- Torri Henry paced the offense with 50 assists. It was the seventh time this season that she has dished out 40 or more assists. The graduate student setter also tallied 12 digs and a pair of aces.
- The Seawolves have emerged victorious in four of their last six meetings with the Tribe.
