Baseball Falls in Doubleheader Opener at No. 2 Georgia Tech

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Stony Brook baseball team opened their four-game set at No. 2 Georgia Tech with a doubleheader defeat against the Yellow Jackets 15-4 and 10-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • James Schaffer led off Game 1 of the doubleheader with a single down the line on the first pitch of the afternoon. The Yellow Jackets, however, erased the threat by catching the leadoff man stealing. Micah Worley got the start for the Seawolves, allowing a one-out single before picking off the runner and striking out the final batter of the inning.
  • In the next inning, Matthew Jackson worked a one-out walk and stole second to move into scoring position. After an Aidyn Coffey walk, both runners advanced on a wild pitch to put the Seawolves at second and third. Nicholas Dromboski loaded the bases after being hit on the foot, but the Yellow Jackets kept Stony Brook off the board with a strikeout and a flyout to left.
  • Georgia Tech took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a bases-loaded walk and a hit-by-pitch.
  • After the Yellow Jackets added a run in the third, Jackson drew another one-out walk and Coffey followed with a single to put runners on first and second. Jackson later scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 3-1.
  • Following a Ty Panariello-induced double play in relief of Worley, Pilla put the Seawolves in front in the next inning with a three-run shot to right field, giving Stony Brook a 4-3 lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to regain a 5-4 advantage. Georgia Tech added two more in the inning to stretch the lead to 7-4. The Seawolves responded with a run of their own, as Scott Gell came off the bench with a double and Carson drove him in with a double to the corner, trimming the deficit to 7-5.
  • Georgia Tech broke the game open in the sixth, scoring six runs to take a 13-5 lead. The Yellow Jackets tacked on another in the seventh and held the Seawolves scoreless the rest of the way to secure a 14-5 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2 - 7 innings)
  • After both teams went down in order in the opening frame, highlighted by a 1-2-3 first inning from Hunter Colagrande, the Seawolves grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Doughty led off with a single, and Jackson reached on an error. Doughty later came home on a sacrifice bunt by Aidyn Coffey. A few batters later, Nicholas Dromboski drove in Jackson and Gell with a double off the centerfield wall.
  • The Yellow Jackets responded immediately, plating five runs on six hits to take a 5-3 lead after two innings.
  • Stony Brook went back to work in the top of the third. Schaffer sparked the rally with a double down the line, followed by a Zampieron single and a Pilla walk to load the bases. Doughty avoided the double play and brought home Schaffer to make it 5-4. Jackson then tied the game with a single to center, but Georgia Tech kept it even heading into the bottom half of the inning.
  • Christian Martinez entered out of the bullpen with two runners on and no outs in the third and worked out of the jam, picking off a runner at third with the bases loaded.
  • Dromboski drew a walk to open the next inning and stole second on the following pitch to give the Seawolves a runner in scoring position with no outs. Schaffer followed with a walk, but Stony Brook was unable to capitalize. Martinez returned in the next frame, allowing a two-out double before stranding the runner with a strikeout.
  • The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs in the inning.
  • Doughty came up with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning down five runs but GT on a ground out to end the threat.
  • Georgia Tech would hold the Seawolves at ease, securing the 10-5 victory.
