STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook women's lacrosse picked up another ranked win on Friday afternoon, downing No. 19 Denver 12-11 in overtime at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stony Brook had some chances in the opening minutes to score, but was unable to find the back of the net. The Seawolves would break the scoreless stalemate to take a 1-0 lead courtesy of a goal by Isabella Caporuscio with 5:26 remaining in the first quarter. Following the opening goal from Stony Brook, Denver would score two of the next three goals, making it a 2-2 game going into the second quarter.
The Seawolves would open the scoring in the second quarter, but the Pioneers responded with the next two to take a 4-3 lead. Stony Brook answered right back with gaol from Haydin Eisfeld to even things up again. Each side would then trade a goal apiece, making it 5-5 with 3:57 remaining in the second quarter. Another goal from Eisfeld in the closing seconds put the Seawolves in front 6-5 going into the half.
Things were once again drawn even just 56 seconds into the third quarter after a Pioneer goal opened the second half scoring. Denver then scored two of the next three goals to take an 8-7 lead with 3:01 left to go in the third quarter.
Stony Brook was able to retake the lead thanks to three straight free-position goals to open the fourth quarter as it led 10-8 with 8:06 remaining. After the Seawolves tacked on another goal, Denver rattled off three straight goals to tie things at 11-11, sending the game into overtime.
Stony Brook and the Pioneers both had opportunities to score in the opening moments of overtime but were unable to convert. Then, in the final seconds of the overtime period, Mirabella Altebrando scored to walk it off for the Seawolves.
STATS AND NOTES
- Altebrando led the way offensively with five points, netting the game-winning goal in overtime. She finished with a pair of goals and three assists.
- Eisfeld registered a hat trick, the third of her career and the first of the season for the Bayport, Long Island native.
- Caporuscio, Schorr, Walsh, Fusco and Martin all recorded multiple points in the win.
- Natalia Altebrando made four saves, earning her first victory in cage of the 2026 season.
- After missing on its initial two attempts in the first half, the Seawolves netted all three of their free-position shots in the fourth quarter.
- Stony Brook picked up its second ranked win of the season, adding to its already impressive resume.
- The Seawolves improved to 5-7 all-time against Denver and 3-2 under the guidance of Joe Spallina.
