HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Behind a dominant outing from
Micah Worley and timely hitting, Stony Brook shut out Hofstra, 5-0, on the road this afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Seawolves struck first, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Nick Zampieron reached on an error to open the game and later came around to score after back-to-back hits from Nicholas Dromboski and Chanz Doughty. Chris Carson drove him in on a double play to give Stony Brook the early edge.
- Micah Worley got the start for the Seawolves and set the tone right away. The left-hander dominated the first inning, retiring the side in order and ending the frame with back-to-back strikeouts.
- Stony Brook added another run in the second to make it 2-0. Aidyn Coffey doubled to right field, stole third, and came home on a wild pitch to extend the lead.
- Worley stayed in control in the second, turning in another 1-2-3 inning with two more strikeouts.
- Doughty recorded a one-out ground-rule double in the third but was left stranded. In the bottom half, Worley allowed his first hit of the game with two outs, but Scott Gell picked off the runner at first to end the inning.
- After a quick top of the fourth, Worley worked around a two-out double in the bottom half, finishing the inning with a swinging strikeout to keep the Seawolves ahead, 2-0.
- Stony Brook put together back-to-back one-out singles in the fifth, but Hofstra turned a double play to end the threat. Worley issued a leadoff walk in the bottom half but responded with two strikeouts and a fielder's choice to get out of the inning.
- Following a scoreless top of the sixth, Hofstra opened the bottom half with an infield single. The Seawolves' defense responded with a 4-6-3 double play, and Worley capped the inning with his 10th strikeout of the game.
- Stony Brook broke things open in the eighth, extending the lead to 5-0. Doughty doubled, Carson walked, and Gell singled before Mike Vervoni delivered a clutch hit that drove in two runs. Another run came across on a Hofstra error during the play.
- Worley's day ended in the eighth after recording two more strikeouts. He finished with 7.2 innings pitched, allowing just three hits and no runs while striking out 13 and walking one. Aidan Colagrande entered in relief to close things out.
- Colagrande handled the rest as the Seawolves secured the 5-0 victory.
