MONMOUTH, N.J. — A dominant 11-0 scoring run helped pave the way for a big CAA victory for Stony Brook men's lacrosse on Saturday afternoon, as it defeated Monmouth 17-10 in New Jersey.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks wasted little time generating early scoring chances, leading to the opening goal and a 1-0 advantage. The Seawolves then controlled possession for the next few minutes, as
Justin Bonacci fired in a goal to draw things even. Each team added a goal in the final four minutes of the first quarter, sending things into the second quarter all even at 2-2.
As in the opening quarter, Monmouth generated several scoring chances to begin the second quarter, but was turned away by
Tommy Wilk, who made four saves, keeping the game tied. The Stony Brook attack proceeded to break through, scoring the two next goals to go ahead 4-2 with 9:14 remaining in the second quarter. This multi-goal lead did not last long at all, as the Hawks answered back with a pair of goals to tie the game at 4-4 just a few minutes later. Monmouth was able to score two out of the next three goals, giving it a 6-5 lead heading into the half.
A goal from
Caleb Yeung in the opening minute of the third quarter once again tied things up. This tie lasted less than a minute, as the Hawks put in the next four goals to go in front 10-6 with 10:10 remaining in the third quarter. Over the next six and a half minutes, the Seawolves would rattle off four straight goals to even the score again, this time at 10-10. This scoring run continued as
Collin Williamson notched another goal to put Stony Brook ahead, heading into the final quarter of play.
The Seawolves offense continued to roll in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, scoring three more goals to extend their scoring run to 8-0 and give them a four-goal lead with 11:28 remaining. To close out the play, Stony Brook tacked on an additional three goals, easily securing the 17-10 conference win.
