STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook women's lacrosse took care of business on Thursday afternoon, defeating Elon 18-6 in the CAA Semifinals at LaValle Stadium, punching its ticket to the CAA Championship Game on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Seawolves offense got things going immediately, as
Isabella Caporuscio scored a player-up goal 59 seconds into play, giving Stony Brook a 1-0 lead. This early advantage did not last long; the Phoenix would respond with a goal to even the score with 10:07 remaining in the first quarter. After being denied on three solid chances following the opening goal, the Seawolves would break the tie on a goal on the move from
Haydin Eisfeld. Stony Brook tacked one more in the first quarter, taking a 3-1 lead into the second quarter.
Elon opened the second quarter strong, scoring two of the first three goals, with the Seawolves now leading 4-3. The Phoenix would then continue to battle back, evening the score at 5-5. Not even a minute later, the tie was broken by a free-position goal from Caporuscio, putting Stony Brook back in front.
Julia Fusco scored a goal in the opening minute of the third quarter to put the Seawolves ahead by three. That three-goal lead lasted only about a minute and a half, as the Phoenix scored, and Stony Brook held an 8-6 lead with 13:04 remaining in the third quarter. Two more goals were scored in the quarter, both by the Seawolves, as they entered the fourth quarter with a 10-6 advantage.
Stony Brook put the finishing touches on its semifinal win in the fourth quarter, tacking on eight goals to secure the 18-6 win and advance to its fourth straight CAA finals.
