Volleyball Takes Third At Buffalo Invitational

Buffalo, NY - Stony Brook (1-2) used a pair of comebacks in defeating Canisius, 3-0, and took game one before falling to St. John's, 3-1, at the Buffalo Morgan Classic Saturday. It marked the second straight win over Canisius and the third straight loss to St. John's.

In the team's 30-25, 35-33, 30-28 win over Canisius, Regine Lilavois sparked Stony Brook's game one victory, collecting 10 digs and seven assists. The Seawovles hit a sparkling .333 in the game, committing five errors in 30 attempts while getting 15 kills. Jaime O'Connor led the assault with six kills.

Canisius took control in game two and held a 26-20 advantage before the Seawolves stormed back to tie the game at 28-28. Julie Zub's 15 assists and Debra Falkenberg's eight kills led the way to a comeback and a 35-33 game victory.

The Seawolves fell behind in game three, down 27-24 as the Golden Griffins looked to force a game four. It would not be as Susanne Westing had shut the door on several late attempts and ended with seven digs. Rachel Goldsmith haad five kills and a pair of block assists.

Falkenberg ended the match with 13 kills and freshman Valerie Maloy had 14.

The Seawolves captured game one against St. John's for the third straight time to open the season, thanks to Maloy's six kills and LaToya Byerly's five digs. Goldsmith had seven kills and Susanne Westing collected seven of her match-high 22 digs and the Red Storm held on for a 30-28 victory. St. John's hit .367 in game three and cruised in game four to get the match victory.

Goldsmith finished with 17 kills and Debra Falkenberg had 14. Julie Zub had 44 assists.

Stony Brook heads to Niagara for a 12:00 p.m. match on Sunday.
