Volleyball Fights Valiantly In Loss To New Hampshire

Final Stats

The Stony Brook volleyball team closed their weekend road trip to New England with a 3-1 (30-17, 30-20, 17-30, 30-20) loss to the New Hampshire Wildcats. The Seawolves finished 1-1 on the weekend after defeating defending conference champs, Northeastern, Friday night.

The Seawolves' attack had some trouble getting started in game one, but was lead by three kills from sophomore Julie Zub. Game two feature a tenacious clash between senior LaToya Byerly and Karen Harrington from New Hampshire. Byerly spearheaded the Stony Brook attack with a game-high four kills, but 17 kills from the Wildcat side proved to be too much as the Seawolves dropped game two in a tight battle.

Despite being down 0-2, Stony refused to give in and fought tenaciously in game three. The Seawolves' attack caught fire thanks the three kills from sophomore Danielle MacKnight. More impressive was the eight blocks logged by the Stony Brook defense. MacKnight and Byerly each recorded three in the win.

Game four continued the trend of closely fought games as neither team could take the advantage in the early portion of the game. In the end it was Wildcat rally at the 15-point mark that pushed New Hampshire to the win. Junior Rachel Goldsmith did chart four kills in the game to lead the Seawolves.

Byerly was tops in the kills category with 13 overall, followed by eight from both Goldsmith and MacKnight. On the defensive side, Goldsmith led all in digs with 16 and junior Alison Fields tallied 14. Maria Samilo and MacKnight each finished with four blocks.

Stony Brook is off until Friday when they travel to Vestal, N.Y. to take on the Binghamton Bearcats in conference action. The following day the Seawolves battle the Albany Great Danes. The Binghamton match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start and the Great Dane match will begin at 4 p.m.
