Volleyball Downs Binghamton In Five

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Stony Brook volleyball team (16-9/2-2) scored the first six points of the fifth and decisive game (30-16, 23-30, 30-26, 27-30, 15-9) to hold off the Binghamton Bearcats (7-12, 2-1) in a conference match Friday evening. Sophomore Julie Zub eclipsed her own school record of 61 assists in five games with her 62 assist-performance in the five-game victory.

Senior hitter LaToya Byerly led both teams with 24 kills and hit a strong .340 for the match. She was one of four Stony Brook players with double-digit kills on the evening. Sophomore Valerie Maloy's 14 kills tied her for second in the match in the kills category and junior Rachel Goldsmith and sophomore Danielle MacKnight were just behind her with each finishing with 13 and 12 kills respectively. The Seawolves overall enjoyed a big offensive advantage, producing a .276 attack percentage to Binghamton's .146. On the defensive side sophomore Abby Egan led the way with her 17 digs. Maloy was just behind her with 12.

Stony Brook hits the road again tomorrow as they travel to Albany, N.Y. to take on the Great Danes. Albany comes into tomorrow's match with a three-game winning streak after downing Hartford in three. The match is set for a 4 p.m. start.
