The Stony Brook men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to the United States Military Academy in their first dual-meet of the 2002-03 season. Army scored the win over the men, 170-71, and the women of Army were victorious by a score of 157-84.
The Seawolves did have several strong performances in the pool especially in the relay events. The team of Kim Harris, Alison Porteus, Michelle Miller and Jessica Claud swam to a first place finish in the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:04.14. The women also scored a first place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:43.92, thanks to Claud, Miller, Adrianna Snydstrup and Starlyn Rupinski. On the men's side, the team of Nathan French, Ted Freeborn, Dan Berzansky and James Payne took the top position in the 400 freestyle relay after posting a 3:15.31 and Brian Leight, Frank Schursky, Brian Schleimer and Nit Mirchel came in second in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:38.12.
Matt Hanson performed strong individually in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:55.04, earning him first place in the event. Kim Harris was also impressive in the 200 backstroke, setting a new-school record and taking first place with a 2:12.92. Nathan French was also tops in the 500 yard freestyle, finishing with a 4:48.88. In the 1000 freestyle, Stony Brook's Erin Bowman took second with a time of 11:07.65 and Kyle Thornton finished third in the same event with a time of 10:27.47. Rupinski also swam strong individually, taking second place in the 200 free thanks to time of 2:02.87 and Edmund Freeborn claimed third on the men's side with a 1:48.65 finish.
Hanson missed a first place finish in the 200 IM by a fraction of a second, finishing in second with a time of 2:00.64. The Seawolves took second and third in the 50 free, with Harris posting a 25.77 and Jamie Bevilacqua posting a time of 26.71. Snydstrup's time of 57.54 in the 100 free was good enough for second and Porteus claimed third in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:34.70.
In the diving events, Patrick Marcel took second in the one-meter dive with a score of 255.68 and Kristi Schubert claimed third on the three-meter dive with a score of 225.23.
Both the men's and women's teams are back in action Saturday as they open the home side of their schedule in a meet against Providence. The meet is set for a 1 p.m. start.
