STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -
The Stony Brook volleyball team (14-7) scored two shutouts Saturday over the Long Island University Blackbirds (10-10) and the Wagner College Saints (0-20), extending their winning streak to four matches.
The Seawolves kicked off Saturday's competition in the Wagner Tri-Match with a 3-0 win (30-24, 30-20, 30-24) over the Blacksbirds, avenging a tough 3-2 loss they endured earlier this year. The Seawolves used the three-pronged attack of senior LaToya Byerly (Beaumont, Texas), junior Rachel Goldsmith (Aurora, Pa.) and sophomore Valerie Maloy (Gibsonia, Pa.) to ease their way to their sixth shutout win of the year. The three combined for 37 of the Seawolves 53 kills in the match, with Byerly leading all with 14.
Goldsmith posted the most accurate attack in the match, killing 11-out-of-16 balls to give her a .563 attack percentage. Sophomore Julie Zub (St. Louis, Mo.) finished with 34 assists and sophomore Abby Egan (Lansing, Mich.) scored a match-high 14 digs.
The Seawolves second match of the day ended with similar results, but featured a different cast of characters. The 3-0 win (30-17, 30-13, 30-15) presented Egan and opportunity to step back from her usual libero position and play the attack. The result was a match-high 12 kills. She was followed by senior Marisa Feldman's (Dix Hills, N.Y.) eight. Zub again charted 34 assists in the win and also finished with five kills and five aces.
Stony Brooks weekend of volleyball continues tomorrow as the Seawolves open America East conference against the Hartford Hawks at 4 p.m. The Hawks enter the match with a 9-7 overall record after most recently falling to Marist, 3-1.
