STONY BROOK, N.Y. -
The Stony Brook women's basketball team took advantage of second-half heroics from sophomore Stephanie Barlett Thursday night in their opening-season exhibition with the New York Gazelles. The Seawolves led the Gazelles, 35-21, at the half but New York managed to trim the lead to one just before the end of regulation. Bartlett stroked a three-pointer, her fourth of the night, in the closing minute of the contest to lead the Seawolves to a 59-55 win. The Seawolves scored a total of 18 points from behind the three-point line, doubling New York's total of nine.
Bartlett finished the game with a total of 14 points, good enough for second on the team. Stony Brook was led by Danyelle Ingram's 17 and junior Danielle DeGiorgio was just behind Bartlett with 11 points in the win. Senior Malica Jibowu just missed breaking into the top three in scoring with 10 points of her own.
The Gazelle offense was spearheaded by Leah Cromer who dumped in a team-high 15 points in the loss. Lawanda Green and Mama Clarkson were just behind her, scoring 10 and 11 points respectively. Nine of Clarkson's 11 game from three-point territory.
The women's basketball team will only play the one exhibition this year and starts regular season play on Nov. 22 as the team travels to Dallas, Texas to take on Southern Methodist. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. start.
