BACKDROP: The Seawolves finally ended their three-game skid with a 68-58 comeback victory at Northeastern on Sunday. Stony Brook has dropped four of its last six games, including three losses on the road, to fall to seventh place in the America East.
ABOUT THE TERRIERS: With their two wins over Northeastern and Albany last week, Boston University improved to 15-9 on the season and secured its first winning season in seven years. Sophomore guard Katie Terhune had her second double-double of the season against Albany, scoring 21 points with 11 rebounds in the 60-61 victory. Senior guard Dia Dufault came off the bench against Albany to match a season-high with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Freshman forward Adrienne Norris leads the team with 121 rebounds (6.5 rpg). Terhune leads both the team and the conference with 19.1 points per game.
THE SERIES: The Seawolves defeated Boston University 67-60 earlier this season in the first-ever meeting between the teams.
LAST MEETING WITH THE TERRIERS: Stony Brook used a 17-5 run in the second half and clutch free-throw shooting to defeat Boston University at the SBU Sports Complex on Jan. 13. The win marked the sixth straight Seawolves victory. The first half was close with six lead changes and four tied scores. BU nailed 8-of-12 free throws during the first 20 minutes, helping them to a 27-24 lead at the break. But in the second half, it was the Seawolves who converted 24-of-33 free throws (73 percent) compared to just 8-of-16 from the charity stripe for the Terriers. During a five-minute spurt in the second half, the Seawolves outscored BU 17-5 to take a 42-36 advantage, as SBU's Erika Shipley scored nine of her game-high 21 points during the stretch. Stony Brook built the lead to as many as nine points on two occasions before the Terriers began to chip away. Alison Argentieri nailed a three-pointer and Adrienne Norris added another with just 41 seconds left to cut the lead to 61-59. But the Seawolves hit 6-of-10 free throws during the remaining seconds to hold on for the win. For Stony Brook, Shipley converted 12-of-13 free throws and recorded six rebounds to go along with her career-high of 21 points. Jill George earned her third-straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sherry Jordan also added a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to go along with four assists and four steals. Danielle DeGiorgio chipped in with nine points and six boards. The Terriers were led by Argentieri and Katie Terhune, who each scored 15 points. Norris chipped in with 13 points.
INJURY UPDATE: Although Stony Brook has battled injuries all season, things are finally looking up for the Seawolves in terms of bench personnel. Sarah Burkett, Danyelle Ingram, Sherry Jordan, Malica Jibowu, Theresa LoParrino, Danielle Mosley, Erika Shipley and Maggie Triggs have all had their share of the injury bug, but just about everyone has returned to action. Ingram, who separated her shoulder on Nov. 30, will miss the rest of the season as she recuperates from surgery. Mosley also continues to undergo rehab from an ACL injury.
LAST TIME OUT: Sherry Jordan scored 14 of her game-high 26 points in the second half to lead Stony Brook to a come-from-behind 68-58 victory over Northeastern on Sunday. Melissa Kowalski, Aisha Williams and Joi Jefferson each had 14 points to lead Northeastern. Theresa LoParrino netted 17 in the contest for the Seawolves, 13 coming in the second half, as Stony Brook came back from a deficit as large as 14 in the first half and 10 at intermission. The Huskies led 49-43 at the 7:49 mark in the second half, but Stony Brook scored nine unanswered points to take a 52-49 lead with 4:42 remaining in the game. Jordan had six points in the decisive run and LoParrino added a three-pointer. NU got within one at 52-51 on a pair of Jefferson free throws with 4:18 remaining. The Seawolves answered with eight straight points to push the lead to nine, 60-51, with only 1:59 to go. In all it was a back-breaking 17-2 run by the Seawolves over a span of 4:50 with eight points from Jordan and seven from LoParrino. Williams netted a three-pointer that sparked a 5-0 Husky surge and brought NU back within four at 60-56 with 1:22 showing. But that was as close as the Huskies would get the rest of the way. Stony Brook led 11-9 with 13:05 left in the first half when the Huskies went on a 16-0 run to open up a 25-11 edge with 7:18 to go before the break. Kowalski had a pair of three-pointers in the surge. The Seawolves came back with an 8-2 spurt, highlighted by a pair of Jordan jumpers, to cut the deficit to eight, 27-19, with 3:23 left. The Huskies led by seven in the closing seconds of the first half when Williams was fouled throwing up a shot from close to midcourt as the first-half buzzer sounded. She connected on all three free throws to push the NU lead to 10 points, 34-24, at the intermission. Theresa LoParrino came off the bench to score 17 points for the Seawolves who snapped a three-game losing streak. Erika Shipley and Sarah Burkett each chipped in with nine points.
MAKING A COMEBACK: The Seawolves battled back from a 10-point deficit at halftime in their win against Northeastern. The Huskies led by as many as 14 in the first half and held a 34-24 lead at halftime. But the Seawolves outscored NU 44-24 in the second stanza, including a 17-2 spurt, for their 13th win on the season. The 14-point comeback is the Seawolves' biggest this season.
JORDAN ON THE REBOUND: Sophomore guard Sherry Jordan broke out of a recent slump against the Huskies, scoring a game-high 26 points. Jordan had scored below her team-leading average in the previous six straight contests, but exploded for 11-of-20 shooting en route to 26 points against Northeastern. The total is her second-highest effort this season.
T. LO'S REAL: Sophomore guard Theresa LoParrino also bounced back from a slump, tallying double digits in the Northeastern contest for the first time in six games. LoParrino had not scored more than five points since a 16-point effort against Princeton on Jan. 29. LoParrino also had four rebounds and four assists against the Huskies.
BOJANA BREAKS OUT: Freshman center Bojana Bogetic played a season-high 15 minutes against Northeastern, grabbing five rebounds and scoring two points. It was her best effort since joining the team on Feb. 1.
LUCKY 13: Senior Jill George's game-high 13 boards against Hartford marked the 11th time this season she has recorded double digits in rebounds.
STREAKS: Stony Brook's wins and losses this season have seemed to come in bunches. SBU opened the season 1-4, but then the Seawolves won eight of their next nine games. Since then, SBU has gone 4-6, including four setbacks on the road. .
BURKETT STEPS UP: Senior Sarah Burkett has taken it up a notch after entering the starting lineup. The point guard has started 11 of the last 12 games, scoring a season-high 11 points on two of those occasions. Against Northeastern, Burkett nailed 3-of-6 threes for nine points. Against Maine on Feb. 9, Burkett played the entire 40 minutes and tallied 11 points, including nine in the first half. She finished the game with 3-of-4 shooting, all from behind the arc, and also dished two assists.
LOOKING AHEAD: After SBU's game against BU, the Seawolves return home for a Feb. 24 date with Albany and faces Binghamton on the road four days later. The Seawolves close the regular season against Vermont on Mar. 2.
