Stony Brook at Navy Game Notes, March 23, 2002 - 12:00 p.n.
Game Backdrop: Stony Brook plays its second nationally-ranked opponent this season Saturday against No. 14 Navy. It is only Stony Brook second road game in six outings.
Last Time Out: Stony Brook dominated Lafayette in a 14-4 win on Wednesday. Kevin Pall scored four times and Steve Conlon added a goal and three assists in the win. Steve Armsworthy made six saves in one half of action to earn the win.
The Matchup: A matchup between two former ECAC Lacrosse League foes takes place on Saturday in Annapolis, Md. at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium. It is a matchup between two of the best defensive teams in the nation through the early part of the season. Navy currently ranks fourth in the nation, yielding only 6.6 goals per game while SB is 13th at 7.6 gpg. Kevin Pall leads the Seawolves with 17 goals, the second highest total in Division I lacrosse through Wednesday's action.
The Series: Stony Brook has never beaten Navy as the Midshipmen have won all six meetings between the two teams. Last year, Navy posted a 14-6 win over SB at Seawolves Field. Navy's Eddie McKinnon has a goal and three assists in the win.
Rookie Of The Week: Freshman Steve Conlon notched four goals and three assists in two games last week. His performance earned him America East Rookie of the Week honors as he became the first Seawolf to win the award.
Conlon picked up where he left off last week with four points in the win over Lafayette. He now has 11 points through his first five games.
With Open Arms: After missing two games with a knee injury, Steve Armsworthy has made his presence felt since his return to the lineup two games ago. He made 11 saves in SB's comeback win over Quinnipiac and then turned aside six shots in Wednesday's win over Lafayette. He now has a 7.16 goals against average and a .610 save percentage.
Versus Ranked Opponents: Stony Brook is 2-14 versus nationally-ranked opponents since 1997. One of those wins was a 10-9 upset of No. 16 UMBC last year. Navy is the first ranked opponent that SB has faced this season.
The 100 Goal Man: Kevin Pall made history on Wednesday against Lafayette. Early in the third quarter, he notched his third goal of the game which was also the 100th goal of his standout career. He became only the second player in school history to reach the 100-goal plateau. Now with 101 career goals, Pall is chasing the all-time mark of 112 that Courtney Wilson set from 1994-97.
Pall also now has 111 career points which ranks seventh all-time.
11 Wins 11: Junior face-off specialist Dennis Nafte (who wears No.11) won all 11 of his face-offs against Lafayette. He has now won 39 of 55 face-offs for a .709 winning percentage.
A Goal In The Hat: Long-stick middie Eric Hatkewitz has scored in three-straight games and has four points for the year. He had a goal and four assists all of last year.
Scoring Touch: Denis Scannell has found his scoring touch in the early going, scoring six times in SB's first five games. He is on pace to score more than 17 goals this season - his current career high is 11.
Lax Facts: Dan DaPonte notched his first point of the year with an assist against Lafayette . . . George LaFlare scored twice versus the Leopards - his first two goals of the season . . . Pall has scored in 35 consecutive games . . . the Seawolves have won 72 of 109 face-offs this season (.661) . . .
