A rigorous 12-game non-conference slate highlights the 2002-03 Stony Brook women's basketball schedule, released this week. The Seawolves will take on five postseason competitors from last season, including four teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
The Seawolves, who compiled a 16-14 overall record last season and earned a runner-up finish in the 2002 America East Conference Tournament, kick off the 2002-03 season with a trip to the Southern Methodist University Tournament, which also includes Wake Forest and LaSalle, on Nov. 22-23. After home dates with Wright State and local rival St. John's, Stony Brook hosts its annual Holiday Inn Express Tournament on Dec. 6-7. The Seawolves, who have captured the last three HIE crowns, play host to Fairleigh Dickinson, Bradley and Florida International. FIU earned a No. 5 seed in last year's NCAA Tournament, advancing to the second round and finishing 23rd in the final Associated Press poll.
After facing Fordham at home on Dec. 10 and traveling to Morgan State on Dec. 14, Stony Brook enjoys a two-week break before its final regular-season tournament. The Colorado State University Tournament, Dec. 28-29, features the host Rams, who were seeded No. 7 in last year's NCAA Tournament and ranked 20th in the final AP poll, and UC-Santa Barbara, which advanced to the second round of the Tournament. Richmond closes out the tournament field. A home contest against B rown on Jan. 5, 2003, closes out the non-conference schedule.
A rematch of last year's America East Tournament Championship gets conference play underway on Jan. 8. Stony Brook travels to face Hartford, which captured last year's title and an automatic NCAA berth with a 50-47 victory over the Seawolves. SBU plays host to the Hawks on Feb. 19. Stony Brook faces regular-season champion Vermont on the road Feb. 8, with the rematch on March 8 to close out the regular season. Vermont advanced to the quarterfinal round of last year's Women's National Invitational Tournament.
The America East Tournament takes place March 13-15 at the University of Hartford.
