Volleyball Scores Shutout Over Sacred Heart

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's volleyball team (8-1) won its seventh game straight in impressive fashion, with a 3-0 (30-14, 30-25, 30-20) shutout of the Sacred Heart Pioneers (0-4) Tuesday afternoon in Stony Brook, N.Y. Senior LaToya Byerly (Beaumont, Texas) led all players with 13 kills, followed by Rachel Goldsmith's 12.

The Seawolves started out the first match on a 9-0 run and never looked back. The Pioneers committed numerous hitting errors in the game and could never recover. Overall Stony Brook out hit Sacred Heart by .250 points in the contest. The Seawolves posted a .371 hitting-percentage in the three games while Sacred Heart posted a .121 performance. Sophomore Julie Zub (St. Louis, Mo.) facilitated the attack with 43 assists from her setter position.

Both teams experienced trouble on the serve, with the Pioneers committing five errors over the course of the three games while the Seawolves missed a total of nine serves. The difference came on the ace side, with Stony Brook putting down eight aces and the Pioneers only scoring two. Zub led all with four.

The shutout is the Seawolves' second straight and they have blanked three of their last four opponents. Up next for Stony Brook is a road trip to Fairfield, Conn. to clash with Fairfield, University of Illinois-Chicago and Harvard. The Seawolves kickoff the tournament against University of Illinois-Chicago at 4:30 p.m.
