Seawolves Drop A Heartbreaker In Five

New Britain, Conn. - The Stony Brook volleyball team (10-7) opened the 2002 Central Connecticut State University Invitational with a tough 3-2 (30-21, 30-27, 28-30, 25-30, 6-15) defeat at the hands of the Yale Bulldogs (3-4). The Seawolves jumped out to a two-game lead, but the Bulldogs fought back to take the following three games to grasp the win.

The Stony Brook attack was led by the duo of senior LaToya Byerly (Beaumont, Texas) and sophomore Valerie Maloy (Gibsonia, Pa.). They each scored a team-high 14 kills in the match and were followed by sophomore Julie Zub (St. Louis, Mo.) and junior Rachel Goldsmith (Aurora, Ill.) who scored eight kills each in the 3-2 loss. Zub also had 45 assists in the match.

Stony Brook had an up-and-down night on the attack, hitting .199 compared to the .273 attack-percentage posted by Yale. The Bulldogs had five players with double-digit kills in the match, led by Renee Lopes' 16.

The volleyball team has a busy day tomorrow, as they are scheduled to play a doubleheader in the closing round of the CCSU Invitational. The Seawolves have an early match against the Rider Broncs at 10 a.m. and then take on the hosting Blue Devils of Central Connecticut at 2 p.m.
