Sept. 3, 2002

Final Stats

Jamaica, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's volleyball team (4-1) fought back from a 0-2 deficit Tuesday night to clinch a 3-2 (25-30, 22-30, 30-23, 30-28, 15-11) win over the St. John's Red Storm (0-4). Senior LaToya Byerly (Beaumont, Texas) and sophomore Julie Zub (St. Louis, Mo.) started the comeback in game three and a host of Seawolves carried it throughout.

In game one, Stony Brook could not take advantage of numerous Red Storm errors in the game. The Seawolves committed 12 hitting-errors of their own and never recovered. Junior Rachel Goldsmith (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) led the Seawolves with eight kills and only one attack-error, but her performance was not enough for a win.

Game two brought more of the same for the Seawolves. The Stony Brook attack faltered and managed just 12 kills in the 30-22 loss. Sophomore Julie Zub (St. Louis, Mo.) did have 12 assist in the game and sophomore Abby Egan (Lansing, Mich.) dug nine balls.

The tide would turn slightly in game three with the 30-23 Seawolve victory. Zub and senior LaToya Byerly (Beaumont, Texas) teamed up to spur the change and began to build momentum. Byerly tallied nine of her team-leading 22 kills in the Seawolf win and Zub continued to play well, assisting on 11 kills.

Stony Brook would go on to tie the match at 2-2 with its 30-28 win thanks mainly to the defensive play by the Seawolf front line. Byerly totaled four blocks in the win and the sophomore duo of Danielle MacKnight (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and Maria Samilo (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) teamed up for two apiece.

The Seawolves totally ceased momentum after the game-four win and rolled in game five. Byerly knocked home six kills on six attempts and sophomore Valerie Maloy (Gibsonia, Pa.) added another three. Zub tallied another nine assist in the 15-11 win and finished the match with a total of 52.

The women's volleyball team has now won three straight matches and look to keep the ball rolling Friday when they host the Holiday Inn Express Tournament. Providence, Bucknell and St. Francis (N.U.) are scheduled to play. The Seawolves take on Providence at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
