Women's Basketball Takes On Boston University On Wednesday

Jan. 15, 2003

Game Backdrop: Stony Brook returns home to take on Boston University in America East action. The Seawolves come off a 69-50 loss to Binghamton on the road last weekend, while BU fell to Vermont, 75-61, in Burlington on Sunday.

About the Terriers: Boston University boasts one of the league's leading scorers in junior guard Katie Terhune, who averages 17.5 points per game and hits 39 percent (19-of-49) of her three-pointers. Freshman guard Katie Meinhardt earned America East Rookie of the Week honors after averaging 16.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in two games last week for BU. In BU's 75-61 loss to Vermont on Sunday, the Catamounts' Morgan Hall scored 10 of her 24 second-half points during an 11-0 run that allowed Vermont to pull away, 62-49, with 4:49 remaining in regulation. Meinhardt led the Terriers with 21 points.

Series History: Stony Brook leads the all-time series 2-1, with all three meetings coming last year. The teams split the regular season matchups, while the Seawolves captured a 63-46 victory over the second-seeded Terriers in the first round of last year's America East Tournament.

Injury Update: Theresa LoParrino, who missed the final six games in 2001-02 with an ACL injury, is still out of action. After briefly returning to practice and seeing limited action against Wright State on Nov. 26, LoParrino injured her healthy leg, which was revealed to be multiple stress fractures. She has been undergoing rehabilitation for almost six weeks and could return at the end of the month. The Seawolves have also taken a hit in the post, with both Meghan Barrett and Malica Jibowu suffering injuries. Barrett has not practiced since the team's return from Colorado on Dec. 30 due to soreness in her ankles and will not be available for today's game. Meanwhile, Jibowu suffered a knee injury during practice last week and has not returned. She is awaiting results of an MRI taken this week.

Last Meeting: In their first ever appearance in the America East Tournament, Stony Brook pulled off the first upset with a 63-46 win over No. 2 seed Boston University. The win was a first by the seventh seed over a second seed since 1993. The Seawolves got a stellar performance from sophomore Sherry Jordan, who had 25 points, 12 rebounds, six steals, four assists and two blocks. The Seawolves led 33-20 at the half before the Terriers climbed back to within 37-33 with 13:32 to play in the second half. Stony Brook used a 17-2 run over the next 5:47 to increase the lead to 54-35. Boston University would get no closer than 16 points in the final 7:27 of the game. Stony Brook forced the Terriers into 29 turnovers on the day, matching the America East Tournament record for a quarterfinal game, and collected a season-high 21 steals.

On the Thin Side: Both Stony Brook and Boston University used just eight players in their last game. The Seawolves were hampered by injuries and four players saw limited action due to foul trouble. Sherry Jordan fouled out while three others finished with four fouls. Three Terriers average over 30 minutes per game but nine players have seen action in at least nine games.

Perfect 10: Bojana Bogetic recorded her second double-double of the season against Binghamton with 10 points and 10 rebounds. With Malica Jibowu sidelined due to a foot injury, Bogetic entered the starting lineup for the first time since Dec. 10 against Fordham.

First Half McManus For the second time this year, Kelly McManus scored all of her points against Binghamton in the first half of play. The freshman led the Seawolves with 11 points and also added season-highs of eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. Against Richmond on Dec. 29, McManus scored all 12 of her points in the first 20 minutes.

Jordan Watch: Sherry Jordan's nine points against Binghamton on Saturday kept her in the No. 10 spot on the all-time scoring list. Jordan, who has scored 1,057 points up to this point, needs 16 points to take the No. 9 spot away from Donna Fennessey, who scored 1,072 points from 1994-98.

McManus Earns Honors: Freshman Kelly McManus was named Stony Brook's Athlete of the Week on Jan.6 after a stellar performance against Brown. McManus scorched the Bears for 18 points, 16 in the first half alone. McManus drilled 4-of-5 three-point shots, all in the first half, to lead the Seawolves to an early lead. Her six field goals, six boards and 18 points all marked career-highs.

Last Time Out: Binghamton took control of the game with a 29-4 second-half run and defeated the Seawolves, 69-50, in the Bearcats' America East opener. After building a 34-27 halftime lead on the strength of 62 percent (13-of-21) shooting, Binghamton saw its lead evaporate when Stony Brook used a 10-0 run in the opening minutes of the second period to take a 39-36 lead with 17:31 remaining. With the score tied at 41-41, junior guard Kate Townley stole the ball at midcourt and found classmate Leala Wegwerth for a fastbreak layup. That basket gave BU the lead for good with 12:40 remaining and started the decisive run. Freshman forward Jennifer Haubrich scored all eight of her points during the run. The Bearcats shot just 35 percent (12-of-34) in the second half, but made 10-of-13 free throws and outrebounded Stony Brook over the game's final 13 minutes. Binghamton held a 41-39 rebounding edge for the game. The Seawolves were held to 28 percent (16-of-58) shooting for the game and turned the ball over 26 times. Freshman guard Kelly McManus led Stony Brook with 11 points to go along with eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. Sophomore center Bojana Bogetic had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Looking Ahead: The Seawolves hit the road for their next two games as they travel to face intrastate rival Albany on Saturday and Northeastern on Wednesday, Jan. 22. After that, the Seawolves return to the Sports Complex for three straight games.
