Volleyball Upends UMBC 3-1

Baltimore, Md. - The Stony Brook women's volleyball team bounced back from a loss on Friday night to register a 3-1 win over UMBC on Saturday night, snapping UMBC's five-game win streak. The Seawolves got by the Retrievers in Saturday's America East matchup by scores of 30-28, 30-20, 21-30, 33-31.

The Retrievers held the lead through the mid part of game one before three-straight serving aces by Maria Samilo turned the tides on UMBC, giving the Seawolves a 21-20 advantage. The two teams played the remainder of the set back-and-forth before the Seawolves notched a 29-26 lead on back-to-back kills by Rachel Goldsmith prior to taking the 30-28 win in game one.

The Seawolves carried their momentum into the second game running out to an 11-3 lead early on. The Retrievers made a number of attempts to close the gap as Jennifer Davis hit .429 in game two, but were unable to catch back up to the Seawolves who took the second game 30-20. Stony Brook hit .310 in game two.

In game four the two teams battled it out down to the line as UMBC fought off three match points before a kill by Danielle MacKnight on the fourth match point gave Stony Brook the 3-1 win.

Stony Brook upped its record to 11-9, 2-1 in America East play while UMBC slipped to 13-8, 2-1. The Seawolves are back in action on Friday when they travel to Maine. Match time is 7 p.m.
