Volleyball Knocks Off Northeastern 3-2

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook rallied from a four point deficit early in the fifth game to defeat Northeastern 3-2 (29-31, 30-16, 30-28, 26-30, 17-15) in America East volleyball action on Saturday night at the SBU Sports Complex. The Seawolves, who handed the Huskies their first conference loss of the year, improved to 13-10 overall and 4-2 in league play, while Northeastern fell to 17-7 and 5-1.

Down 7-3 in the fifth game, Stony Brook took advantage of three errors by the Huskies and two kills by Rachel Goldsmith to tie the score at nine. The teams traded points the rest of the way. With the Seawolves facing match point at 14-15, Maria Samilo came up with a huge kill to knot the game at 15. After an attack error by NU's Rebecca Holland, Goldsmith put the game away with a kill up the middle.

The Seawolves led the majority of the first game, but couldn't hold on for the victory as the Huskies rallied to tie the game at 24. With NU up 30-29, Shannon Brooker slammed home a kill to give the Huskies the first set win.

Stony Brook dominated in the second, taking a commanding 8-2 lead early and holding on for the 30-16 win. The Seawolves hit .281 with 13 kills in the game, while the Huskies struggled with a .-049 hitting percentage with 11 errors.

In the third the Seawolves again surrendered an early lead as the game came down to the final points. With the game knotted at 28, Goldsmith and Tesha Harry came up with back-to-back kills to take the victory.

The Huskies picked up their play in the fourth, slowly pulling away after tying the game at 18. NU hit .217, while Stony Brook managed just a .097 percentage.

Goldsmith and Harry each tallied match-highs of 21 kills for the Seawolves, while Harry hit .400 and posted six block assists. Setter Julie Zub added 64 assists, while Abby Egan posted 31 digs in the win. Danielle MacKnight contributed a block solo and five block assists.

Rebecca Holland led NU with 17 kills to go with 24 digs, while Karrin Moore added 15 kills and Kristen Ursillo posted 52 assists.

The Seawolves return to action on Saturday when they play host to Albany at 4:00 p.m.
