St. Louis Rallies Past Women's Basketball 71-62

Nov. 28, 2003

Final Stats

St. Louis, Mo. - Saint Louis senior forward Angie Lewis posted her second-consecutive double-double to lead the Billikens past Stony Brook 71-62 Friday night in the first game of the Coca-Cola Billiken Classic at the Bauman-Eberhardt Athletic Center. Lewis threw in 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Stony Brook capitalized on quick hands defensively and some cold Billiken shooting to surge to a 35-28 halftime advantage. The Seawolves seven steals nullified their 11 turnovers. Meanwhile, the Bills shot only 29.4 percent in the half. The Bills' usually reliable forward tandem of Angie Lewis and Stephanie Solomon were a combined 4-of-15 from the field with Lewis scoring all four buckets.

SLU went scoreless from the field for nearly five minutes as Stony Brook broke from a 13-all tie to a 10-point lead. Freshman guard Yanique Javois broke the drought with a pair of free throws. Senior guard Kirsti Holloway heated up in the last four minutes with seven points and drained a triple as the half ended.

The Billikens came out with a determined defensive effort in the second half and limited the Seawolves to 36.7 percent shooting in the second session. A 19-5 run over the last 8:20 sealed the victory. The Bills pulled within 44-42 on freshman guard Tyler McIlwraith's free throws, but Stony Brook continued to hold off the SLU charge.

Solomon's traditional three-point play tied the game at 57, and Holloway's triple out of the right corner gave SLU their first lead of the second half. After Seawolves guard Mykeema Ford knotted the game at 60 with 5:47 remaining, the Billikens' defense shut out Stony Brook until a Bojana Bogetic's lay-up at the horn.

Lewis' lay-in off a pretty feed from sophomore guard Shea Kenny put SLU on top for good 62-60, and she followed that by converting an offensive rebound. With Holloway burying 4-of-4 free throws down the stretch, the Bills efficiently put the game away.

Stony Brook (0-3) shot 42.4 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from three and 72.7 percent from the line. The Seawolves committed 21 turnovers. Ford led four Seawolves in double figures with 13 points. Inbar Orion added 12, Stephanie Bartlett chipped in with 11 and Jessica Smith tossed in 10.

The Billikens shot 38.7 percent from the floor, 15.4 percent from three and 72.4 percent from the line. Holloway finished with 16 points.

Stony Brook will face Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne in the consolation matchup at 7 p.m. EST on Saturday night.
