Keisha Blackwell connected on a layup with 4.4 seconds remaining to break a 57-57 tie and give Providence a 59-57 win over Stony Brook on Thursday night at the Indoor Sports Complex. With the loss, the Seawolves fell to 1-4 on the season, while the Friars improved to 3-5.
The two teams traded leads to start the second half until a layup by Gayle Nwafili and a three-point play by Keisha Blackwell gave Providence a six point lead, 56-50, with 3:53 remaining in the contest. The Seawolves followed with a 7-0 run fueled by a three by Sherry Jordan over the next 2:38 to take a 57-56 lead with 1:15 remaining.
Nwafili went to the line on the Friars next possession, missing the first free throw but sinking the second to tie the game at 57. After a missed basket by Jessica Smith, Providence took the ball up the floor, calling a timeout with 5.7 seconds to go. Kristi Quinn found Blackwell with the inbounds pass, and she sunk the easy layup to give the Friars the 59-57 advantage with 4.4 seconds remaining.
The Seawolves had once last chance, as Jordan took a pass at half court and fed Mykeema Ford on the left side. Ford's shot from 28 feet sailed to the right of the rim at the buzzer, giving the Friars the win.
The Seawolves jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead in the first half, but the Friars crept back to take a five point lead at 17-12 with just over 11 minutes to play as Kristi Quinn stole the ball from Theresa LoParrino and converted a layup. Stony Brook chipped at the lead, tying the game on a pair of free throws by Akia Booker at the 7:34 mark. Just under four minutes later, Kelly Watson buried a three pointer to give the Seawolves a six-point lead, 29-23. Providence came right back, however, and cut the lead to one on a basket by Quiana Copeland to make it 33-32 at the half.
Jordan led all scorers with 18 points to go with 10 rebounds and two blocks in her first outing this season. Smith doubled her previous career-high with 15 rebounds and added 14 points.
The Seawolves dominated the boards, collecting 22 offensive rebounds and 48 total, while the Friars managed just five offensive boards and 28 total. Stony Brook was undone once again, committing 25 turnovers.
Quinn led Providence with 15 points, while Jill Furstenburg added 12 in the win.
The Seawolves return to action on Saturday when they travel to Bronx, N.Y. to take on Fordham at 7:00 p.m.
