The Stony Brook men's and women's swimming and diving teams scored a sweep over the Fairfield Stags Saturday night in Fairfield, Conn. The men improve their overall record to 9-3 on the season, their best record since the 1998-99 season that saw them finish 10-6, with their 137-92 victory. The women's team was also successful Saturday afternoon, posting a final score of 141-100. The win leaves the women with a 6-6 record in the pool for 2002-03.
The men started the day with a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay. The team of Nathan French, Kyle Thornton, Matt Hanson and Ted Freeborn finished at the 4:06.28 mark. Freeborn, Dan Berzansky, Roger Pugh and Frank Schursky went on to take first in the 400 free relay with their time of 3:41.50. French would go on to take two first-place finishes in individual competition with his time of 2:16.96 in the 200 back and his mark of 2:00.94 in the 200 free. Hanson also had success individually with his top finish of 2:16.43 in the 200 fly. Thornton grabbed first in the 50 free with a 25.14 and Ben Abrams was tops in the 200 IM with his 2:20.35. James Payne continued the men's steak with first in the 100 free and Kirill Alekseyev was first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:35.30.
The women's relay team of Kim Harris, Jessica Claud, Michelle Miller and Starlyn Rupinski took first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 4:41.32. Miller, Jamie Bevilacqua, Rupinski and Sarah Doret also finished first in the 400 relay with a time of 4:14.77. Harris would go on to take two first-place finishes individually with her times of 2:32.48 in the 200 IM and 2:29.55 in the 200 back. Claud duplicated the feat with her top finish in the 50 free (28.67) and the 200 breast (2:48.94). Rupinski was also the top finisher in the 100 free with a 1:01.60. Erin Bowman staked claim to the top spot in the 800 free (9:41.42) and Laura Zuffante was first in the 200 fly (2:34.62).
Pat Marcel and Erin Brynes each took first in one-meter diving action. Byrnes posted a scored of 231.825 and Marcel finished with 246.
The swimming and diving team's are scheduled to travel to Orono, Maine Feb. 14 to compete in the America East Tournament. The action is scheduled to start that Friday and will carry on through Feb. 16.
