BACKDROP: Stony Brook looks to bounce back after an 83-58 loss to Vermont on Saturday that snapped a two-game winning streak. The Seawolves hope to even the series with Boston University after the Terriers captured an 88-76 victory in January.
ABOUT THE TERRIERS: BU won its second straight game and fifth in its last seven outings with a 61-49 win over Binghamton on Saturday. Junior center Amparo Lopez scored a career- and team-high 16 points and tied a career- and game-high with nine rebounds to help BU remain second in the America East standings behind Maine. Binghamton falls to 7-12 overall and 3-6 in conference games. Junior guard Katie Terhune scored eight of her 15 points in the first half as the Terriers took a 29-26 lead at the break. Freshman guard Katie Meinhardt earned America East Co-Rookie of the Week honors this week after averaging 10.5 points, 2.0 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.0 rebounds in the Terriers' two wins on the road last week.
SERIES HISTORY: The all-time series is even at 2-2.
LAST MEETING - Jan. 15, 2003:Boston University used a 26-8 run in the second half to hand Stony Brook an 88-76 loss. Kelly McManus' three-pointer with 18:37 remaining in the game gave the Seawolves their largest lead of the night at 51-39. But then Stony Brook went scoreless for nearly four minutes, and the Terriers scored 11 straight points to climb within one, 51-50, at 15:08. Layups by Sherry Jordan and Danyelle Ingram extended the lead back to five, but the Seawolves again went cold as BU outscored them 9-2 over the next four minutes. Rachael Vanderwal's layup with 10:56 left put the Terriers in front for good, giving them their first lead since the 11:09 mark of the first half. BU outscored the Seawolves 51-30 in the second half and shot a blistering 62 percent (18-of-29) from the floor, including 5-of-11 three-pointers. Five Terriers tallied double figures led by Katie Terhune's game-high 18. Larissa Parr added 15 points, Katie Meinhardt had 13 and Adrienne Norris chipped in with 12. Alison Argentieri finished with 11 points and six assists. Sherry Jordan led five Seawolves in double figures with 15 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals. Kelly McManus also added 15, while Bojana Bogetic and Stephanie Barlett scored 13 apiece. Danyelle Ingram chipped in with 12 points.
INJURY UPDATE: Guard Kelly McManus, who has missed the last three games due to problems in her left kneecap, will be available against BU. Forward Malica Jibowu could be available after being sidelined with a stress fracture in her foot since Jan. 11. Center Meghan Barrett has not practiced since Dec. 30 due to ankle problems and is out indefinitely.
LAST TIME OUT: Senior Dawn Cressman scored a team-high 15 points, grabbed nine rebounds and handed out five assists to lead Vermont past visiting Stony Brook, 83-58, in the Catamounts' biggest league victory of the season. Vermont jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game and never looked back. A three-pointer by Cressman at 10:58 gave UVM a 20-6 lead. Stony Brook would put together a 6-0 spurt to close the game to five points, 24-19, with 6:02 left in the first half, but that's as close as the Seawolves would get the remainder of the game. UVM closed out the half with a 10-2 run to take a 34-21 lead into the locker room. The Catamounts lead would grow to as many as 28 in the second half.
LOOKING AHEAD: The Seawolves enjoy a week off after Wednesday's game. They return home on Feb. 19 for a rematch with Hartford.
ON THE BOARDS: Although the Seawolves have held the rebounding edge in 10 games this year, UVM controlled the boards from start to finish last weekend. After a 32-13 edge in the first half, the Catamounts went on to haul down 55 caroms compared to just 29 for Stony Brook. Stony Brook has won the battle on the boards in five of their six victories with its most decisive performance against Hartford on Jan. 8. SBU finished with 48 rebounds compared to just 28 for the Hawks, as Sherry Jordan collected a game-high 15 to lead the way.
AND THEN THERE WERE SEVEN: Stony Brook has battled thin numbers all season due to injuries and dressed only seven players against UVM.
TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS: For the second time in three games, the Seawolves cut their number of turnovers dramatically while enjoying one of their best assist-turnover ratios all season. Averaging 23.4 turnovers per game, Stony Brook suffered just 12 against Vermont while forcing the Catamounts into 15. The Seawolves also dished out 16 assists. The Seawolves' season-best performance came against New Hampshire on Feb. 2, when they turned the ball over only 10 times and just three times in the second half. The Seawolves also recorded 15 assists.
JORDAN WATCH: Sherry Jordan's 16 points against Vermont kept her in the No. 7 spot on the all-time scoring list. Jordan now has 1,183 career points and has quite an obstacle to reach the No. 6 spot. She needs 149 points to pass Joan Gandolf, who tallied 1,331 points from 1990-94.
JORDAN LEADS THE WAY: With a 16-point, eight-rebound performance against Vermont, Sherry Jordan has led the Seawolves in both scoring and rebounding in six of the last seven games. She has reached double figures in 11 of the 12 games she has played, scoring 191 points. That total is second-highest on the team, even though Jordan missed the first eight games of the season. Not only that, since she joined the team on Dec. 28, she has led the team in scoring eight times, rebounds nine times, and steals seven times, all team-bests.
BOBO RETURNS: Bojana Bogetic recorded her first double figure performance in five games against BU, scoring 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting. The last time Bogetic had scored in double digits was against Albany on Jan. 18, when she set a new career-high with 21.
