Women's Basketball Squares Off Against Binghamton

Feb. 25, 2003

Game Backdrop: The Seawolves look to bounce back against Binghamton on Tuesday after a setback on the road at Maine. Stony Brook will try to avenge a 69-50 loss to the Bearcats on Jan. 11. The Seawolves look to close the regular season on a high note as three of their final four games take place at home.

About the Bearcats: Binghamton comes off an 80-73 victory over Northeastern on the road. The 80 points marked the most the Bearcats have scored since last season. Junior point guard Kate Townley led four players in double figures with 16 points. After nine lead changes in the first half, the Bearcats built a double-digit lead midway through the second stanza, pulling away from a 49-49 tie with a 10-0 run, taking a 59-49 lead with 8:47 remaining. After later extending the lead to 13, the Huskies went on a furious rally, outscoring the Bearcats 12-2 over the next two minutes. Leading by just three with 1:22 left, Townley and freshman guard Jen Blues sealed the game with a combined seven free throws in the final minute of the game. Blues added 14 points and Rachel Laws, named America East Rookie of the Week on Monday, had 12. Junior forward Leala Wegwerth came off the bench for the first time this season and had 13 points. The Bearcats shot 51 percent for the game and made a season-high 28 free throws. Blues is the Bearcats' leading scorer with 11.4 per game.

Series History: Binghamton leads the all-time series 8-4 and has won the last three meetings. Stony Brook has not beaten the Bearcats since the 2000-01 season.

Injury Update: Forward Malica Jibowu will miss Tuesday's game due to a knee injury. She is day-to-day. Center Meghan Barrett also remains sidelined. She has not practiced since Dec. 30 due to ankle problems and is out indefinitely.

Last Meeting - Jan. 11, 2003: Binghamton took control of the game with a 29-4 second-half run and defeated Stony Brook, 69-50, at West Gymnasium. After building a 34-27 halftime lead on the strength of 62 percent (13-of-21) shooting, Binghamton saw its lead evaporate when Stony Brook used a 10-0 run in the opening minutes of the second period to take a 39-36 lead with 17:31 remaining. With the score tied at 41-41, junior guard Kate Townley stole the ball at midcourt and found classmate Leala Wegwerth for a fastbreak layup. That basket gave BU the lead for good with 12:40 remaining and started the decisive run. Freshman forward Jennifer Haubrich scored all eight of her points during the run. The Bearcats shot just 35 percent (12-of-34) in the second half, but made 10-of-13 free throws and outrebounded Stony Brook over the game's final 13 minutes. Binghamton held a 41-39 rebounding edge for the game. The Seawolves were held to 28 percent (16-of-58) shooting for the game and turned the ball over 26 times. Freshman guard Kelly McManus led Stony Brook with 11 points to go along with eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. Sophomore center Bojana Bogetic had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

It's Not Delivery, It's DeGiorgio: Danielle DeGiorgio has stepped up her offensive output the past few games, recording double figures in five of the last six outings. DeGiorgio was one of just two double figure scorers against Maine, netting 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting. On the season, DeGiorgio is the Seawolves' third-leading scorer with 8.8 points per game.

Ingram's Importance: Danyelle Ingram came up just short of her career-best scoring performance against Maine last weekend, scoring 19 points to lead the Seawolves. The redshirt sophomore did achieve one career-high--her nine field goals in just 14 attempts marked the most shots she has ever made in a game. Ingram's 9.2 points per game ranks second on the team.

Bobo in the Middle: Sophomore Bojana Bogetic has been an important presence for the Seawolves in the post. She has scored double figures for the Seawolves in three of the last four games. Although Bogetic's three-game streak of scoring double figures came to an end against Maine, she did haul down a team-high 10 rebounds, one short of her career-high.

On the Boards: Stony Brook has been outrebounded in its last four games, and the Seawolves have lost three of those contests. Maine held a decisive 42-26 edge on the boards last weekend. The Seawolves have won the battle of the boards in 10 games this year, including five of their seven victories with its most decisive performance against Hartford on Jan. 8. SBU finished with 48 rebounds compared to just 28 for the Hawks, as Sherry Jordan collected a game-high 15 to lead the way.

Lack of Charity: Stony Brook's free throw shooting woes continued against Maine, as the Seawolves connected on just five of 12 attempts. In the last three games, Stony Brook has made only 27-of-48 free throws (56 percent).

Winning at Home: The Seawolves hope to continue their three-game winning streak at home on Tuesday. Stony Brook bounced back at the SBU Sports Complex after winning just one of their first eight home contests. The last defeat Stony Brook suffered at the SBU Sports Complex came at the hands of Maine, which earned a 66-41 victory on Jan. 25.

Jordan Watch: Sherry Jordan remains in the No. 7 spot on the all-time scoring list with her four points against Maine. Jordan now has 1,207 career points and has quite an obstacle to reach the No. 6 spot. She needs 125 points to pass Joan Gandolf, who tallied 1,331 points from 1990-94.

Last Time Out: Junior forward Heather Ernest logged her ninth double-double of the season with a game-high 28 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Black Bears past Stony Brook University, 81-47, on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. The win was Maine's 15th-straight victory, Ernest scored eight of Maine's first 10 points of the game, and scored 14 in the first half alone. The Seawolves played the Black Bears tough during the first 10 minutes of the opening half, and had the game knotted at 14-14 as late as the 10:45 mark of the first. Ernest connected on a pair of foul shots to put Maine ahead, and in the process launched a 12-0 run over the next three minutes that left the Black Bears with a 26-14 lead with 7:28 to play in the half. The Black Bears widened their lead to 16 points, 41-25, by halftime. The second half was all Maine, which led by as many as 38 points with 2:27 remaining. Junior forward Julie Veilleux tallied 13 points for the Black Bears, while sophomore forward Monica Peterson scored in double-figures for the second straight game with 13 points to go with seven boards. Sophomore Danyelle Ingram led the Seawolves with 19 points, while Danielle DeGiorgio chipped in with 12 points. SBU's Bojana Bogetic pulled down 10 boards in the losing cause. The Black Bears shot 53.6 percent from the field, and held the Seawolves to 35.7 percent shooting. Maine also posted a 42-26 edge on the boards.

Looking Ahead: The Seawolves face their last regular-season conference game on the road when they square off against New Hampshire on Saturday. Stony Brook closes out the regular season at home against Albany and Vermont.
