Game Backdrop:
Stony Brook closes out a three-game home stand on Wednesday against Northeastern. The Seawolves come off a convincing 90-72 victory over New Hampshire on Sunday. The Huskies are riding a four-game winning streak, which began with a win over Stony Brook on Jan. 22.
About the Huskies:
Northeastern's 73-70 win over the Seawolves two weeks ago spurred a four-game winning streak which NU brings into Wednesday's game. Previous to that Jan. 22 victory over SBU, the Huskies had lost three straight. Northeastern defeated Albany, 72-59, on Saturday, led by Maralene Zwarich's 21 points. The Great Danes trimmed a 17-point lead down to three with 7:53 to go, but the Huskies responded with an 11-2 run to put the game away. NU outrebounded Albany 37-29 and shot 49 percent (22-of-45) from the field. Zwarich has led the Huskies in both scoring and on the boards in the past two games. She was named America East Rookie of the Week after her performances against Albany and Binghamton, when she scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Series History:
Stony Brook leads the all-time series 2-1. Northeastern beat the Seawolves for the first time two weeks ago on their homecourt.
Injury Update:
Forward Malica Jibowu and guard Kelly McManus continue to recuperate from their injuries. Jibowu, who suffered a stress fracture during practice, has been sidelined since Jan. 11. She is expected to miss another week before returning. McManus, who missed the Seawolves' last game against New Hampshire due to problems in her left kneecap, will miss another 1-2 weeks. Center Meghan Barrett has not practiced since Dec. 30 due to ankle problems.
Last Meeting - Jan. 22, 2003:
Northeastern rallied for a 73-70 victory over visiting Stony Brook at Solomon Court. The Huskies closed out the game on a 13-2 run over the final 4:29. Freshman Katarina Andersson led the Huskies with a career-high 19 points. Trailing 68-60 with 4:29 left, Northeastern scored eight straight poitns to even the game. Stony Brook took its final lead of the night, 70-68, on a Sherry Jordan jumper. With 1:53 remaining Melissa Kowalski (17 points) hit her fifth and most important three of the night to put the Huskies up for good 71-70. The first half saw 13 lead changes and seven ties in a see-saw battle. Northeastern controlled the boards outrebounding Stony Brook 39-27 for the game.
Made for TV:
Stony Brook's game against New Hampshire was the Seawolves' second America East televised contest, and the Seawolves won both of those games. In the conference opener on Jan. 8, Stony Brook defeated Hartford 58-57 in a game that kicked off the conference broadcast schedule.
Winning at Home:
The Seawolves won just their second game at home this season against New Hampshire, improving their home record to 2-7. Before this season, Stony Brook had lost just nine games at the SBU Sports Complex since joining the ranks of Division I.
Jordan Receives Honors:
Sherry Jordan was named the America East Co-Player of the Week for the second time this week after a stellar performance against New Hampshire. The junior recorded her third double-double of the season with 24 points and 11 rebounds, both team-highs.
Jordan Leads the Way:
Sherry Jordan led the Seawolves in both scoring and rebounding for the fifth straight game against Maine. She has reached double figures in nine of the 10 games she has played, scoring 164 points. That total is second-highest on the team, even though Jordan missed the first eight games of the season. Not only that, since she joined the team on Dec. 28, she has led the team in scoring seven times, rebounds eight times, and steals six teams, all team-bests.
Dynamite DeGiorgio:
Danielle DeGiorgio enjoyed her best shooting performance of the season against New Hampshire, drilling 8-of-11 field goals and scoring 17 points. She also grabbed six rebounds.
Magic Number 22:
Stephanie Barlett equaled her career-high of 22 points against New Hampshire, the third time this season she has recorded that total. Barlett joined the hot-shooting Seawolves with a 9-of-14 (4-of-7) performance.
Danyelle Keeps Dishing:
Danyelle Ingram collected five assists against New Hampshire, the sixth time this season she has led the Seawolves in that category. On the season, she leads the team with 47 assists (2.6 per game).
Red Hot Seawolves:
After a somewhat sluggish first half against New Hampshire, the Seawolves blistered the nets in the second stanza, connecting on 20-of-31 field goals (64.5 percent). Stony Brook also drilled 5-of-6 three-pointers after managing just 1-of-8 in the first half. The Seawolves hit 51 percent for the game, the third time this season they have shot 50 percent or better.
Nifty Ninety:
The Seawolves exploded for 90 points against New Hampshire, by far their best performance this season. Fifty-two of those points came in the second half on 20 field goals. That total is also most points a Stony Brook team has scored since the 1993-94 season, when the Seawolves recorded a 90-66 win over Elmira. Not only that, Stony Brook more than doubled its output from its previous game, when the Seawolves scored just 41 points in a loss to Maine. The Seawolves also made 36 field goals against UNH, bettering their previous season-high of 30 which came on two occasions.
Taking Care of Business:
Another season-best performance against the Wildcats came not in the form of a high number but a low one. Stony Brook turned the ball over only 10 times, with only three miscues coming in the second half. The Seawolves also recorded 15 assists, their best assist-turnover ratio in a game this season.
Jordan Watch:
Sherry Jordan's 24 points against New Hampshire moved her into the No. 7 spot on the all-time scoring list, surpassing Janet Travis who totaled 1,144 points from 1975-79. Jordan now has 1,156 career points and has quite an obstacle to reach the No. 6 spot. She needs 176 points to pass Joan Gandolf, who tallied 1,331 points from 1990-94.
Last Time Out:
Stony Brook did not miss a shot in the final 8:47 to earn a convincing 90-72 victory over New Hampshire at the SBU Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon. The Seawolves nailed 10-of-10 shots down the stretch, including three three-pointers, as a seven-point SBU lead ballooned to as many as 23 on Danyelle Ingram's jumper with 44 seconds remaining. The first half was an even battle that saw eight ties. Trailing 38-31 with 2:51 remaining before the break, the Seawolves scored seven straight points, capped by Sherry Jordan's three-point play, to even the game at 38-38 at the break.
Looking Ahead:
Stony Brook hits the road for the next two games, taking on Vermont on Saturday and Boston University on Feb. 12.
